You can actually toggle duel wield attacks to only attack once. The button is in the bottom left of the center HUD. I think it’s names something like “toggle duel wield fighting”

As a novice player I want to learn how to utilize characters like Astarion more and this was very helpful. Thank you

wow as someone who had no clue how to even multiclass before this video, this was so well explained and reasoned, I'll defintely try it out!

I just love dual wielding in my fantasy genre games! I did something similar, though went Gloomstalker/Thief. You get almost everything here and Dread Ambusher. In the first round DA gives you 3 meters more movement and gives you an extra attack that deals an additional 1d8 damage. You really can't go wrong either way!

There are also 2 finesse longswords in act 1, 1 in the underdark and 1 in the creche.

these guides are really cool for anyone playing the game again on tactician diffculty and going with evil good or neutral to make the game be challenging while not being weak yourself and having all these cool abilities and knowledge of the game

Thanks so much! I really enjoy the character but he was useless in battle. Now he’s a lot more fun to play with and his fighting style fits the character so much better as well

3 rogue(thief),
3barb(frenzied),
1monk(double unarmed with extra bonus attack)
5 fighter(action surge/feat/extra attack)

with this, you get extra bonus which you can use a ki point for, for 2 attacks. (which you could use both bonus actions for 4 attacks if you wanted/needed to)

while raging you do extra dmg with all your attacks... And you get an extra frenzied attack.

Action surge gives you another attack, and battlemaster gives you superiority die you can use for that extra attack

so with this build you can have 7 attacks in one round using ki and action surge, and if not, you can still get 4 attacks with frenzied and your 3 rogue attacks. And by raging, you do extra damage with those 4 standard attacks, and of course even more on your extra 3/4 attacks when you need to bust out the big guns.

also, you can go unarmored with this build, with 16dex and 16con and the level in barb, you get a +6 to ac, and you can get armor ward(level 1 cleric spell) to add a plus 1 and you can get shield of faith for another 2, bringing you up to 19ac, at level 2...this is what I did with my dual wielder in tactical. level 1 rogue for the proficiencies. If you kill the cambions level 1 on the nautaloid you hit level 3 (it's not an easy fight but the massive EXP boost from tactical for killing them makes it SUPER worth it) so you go rogue, barb, fighter. Here it depends on you...personally I went another fighter for action surge, but you can 2 level rush rogue for the bonus action if that is more important. however, after you get your thief sublcass, you wanna pick up monk. Monk goes REALLY well with that extra bonus action because you can use that bonus action because you can spend 1 ki for 2 extra attacks. if you wanna save these for a big fight, you can use BOTH your bonus actions to do FOUR unarmed strikes and then use your main attack...for 5 attacks in one round. with rage adding dmg...

So rogue, barb, fighter, rogue, rogue, monk then all fighter rest of the game. if you wanted to wait until level 7 when the full build comes online, you can just straight play your fav class like fighter or warlock or whatever, until level 7, then respec into 3rogue, 1monk, 1barb, 2 fighter. all the fighter levels after that add bigly to the build, so each level is HELLA satisfying.

There is no specific feat that makes or breaks this build...you can pick dual wield if you have 2 non light finesse weapons at your disposal(not even sure if this is a thing) or you can just add 2 ability points to dex. or you can respec so your dex is 17 and con is 15 so you can put a point in each for 18/16 respectively, keeping the rest of your scores balanced out since you don't need wis for your monk but, since it's for perception and ilithid stuff...it's not a terrible stat to have a few points in. you can sac str completely unless you wanna use shove...but you'll be zippin around the battlefield hard so...I don't see the point.

if all you want from barb is rage and the ac(not a terrible 1level dip if i say so myself) you can go 6fighter 4rogue 1barb 1monk for full 3 feats whiles till getting the ki attacks and rage dmg and con to ac from monk/barb, the extra attack from fighter and the 2 extra feats as well as the dual wield fighting style and action surge...
6 fighter is just stupid. any build you can make with 6 fighter is going to be hella op. 5 warlock 7fighter(going Eldridtch Knight) is stupid op for the war caster ability you get at fighter 7. and the extra warlock attack at 5 and extra fighter attack at 5, stack...unlike other martial classes, and at level 12, with war caster, you get to melee attack after casting a cantrip. and eldritch blast has 2 attacks each use at level 5...so you can cantrip for 2 attacks, melee, action surge, cantrip 2 attacks, melee, then throw your weapon with your EK level 3 ability for 7 attacks in one round while wearing full heavy armor and with a 20 charisma and 16 con and 16wis. since you don't need str/dex for this build at all. you can basically do the rest of your ability points as you wish. but 20charsima is a must so you want actor or performer feat with the ability score feat for 2 more points making your starting 17, into 20. since charisma through the warlocks blade pact means your melee and spells all use the same dmg stat, and you add your charisma modifier to your eldritch blast through an invocation, of which you get 3 of at level 5warlock. plus you get armor of agathas, hellish rebuke, and mirror image spells so you're even tankier and damaging passively, so you can literally just fling eblasts and slap shit with your 1h weapon while being almost invulnerable, but when they do get a hit through, they eat cold dmg from agathas and fire dmg from hellish rebuke, which after a short rest you get more rebukes back, and if you need more tankiness, 9more ac from mirror image is at your beck and call...

*Edit: I forgot the blade pact doesn't work with weapon bind from ek 3, since it says you can't throw or drop your pact weapon.... but even without the throw or if you have another weapon that's not a pact weapon like going dual wielding, you could pact one and bind the other... i think that should work. losing the 2 ac for a bonus melee or ranged attack each round is not the worst trade off i've ever seen.

I'm so happy you're diversifying your content from Tarkov and blowing up J Dog! Always good.

This is exactly the build I've been playing on Astarion for a while. I didn't plan it, I just lean towards Thief and dual crossbows with him anyway and found the gear to support it so it just happened. I didn't take his first Fighter level until level 6, but even one level for 2WF is a massive upgrade and worth it even if you stop at one. But every level after adds something great.

The other option to this is to go pure STR + Heavy armor without need for Ability Improvement feat (start 17 STR +1 Hag +2 Potion). Since you don't get Sneak Attacks with your off-hand you can use a non-finesse weapon there for more effects, and your lower DEX/Initiative actually allows other melee characters to get in position so you can trigger Sneak Attacks with your main-hand finesse weapon (Phalar longsword). Also using Trip maneuver can give you Advantage for Sneak Attack damage with second attack.

I didn't even think about using the dual wielder feat to use rapiers. The focus was always on strength weapons, but now I realized I overlooked those weapons. Definitely going to take another loom at rapiers.

I’ve done a similar build on Astarion, but I did 4 lvls rogue/thief, dipped 2 into Ranger for Hunters mark, then 6 into champion fighter. Got sharpshooter, ASI, and dex resilient, and luck of the far realms. Thinking of getting the dark urge cloak for the next play through, but I’m using the Cloak of Cunning Brume right now. With the dip in 2 ranger it allows you to get both two weapon master and archery to stack with your crossbows hits also thought about great weapon master for duel daggers or scimitars builds or savage attacker since if you start of the match with the enemy surprised you get a free critical and those along with champion will give you more free attacks. Combine that with the dark urge cloak and I imagine it’ll be pretty darn good.

Heh, this is pretty much the exact build i'm running.
I strongly recommend using the phalsar longsword on this in the early/mid game! It counts as a finesse weapon!
The shrieking bladesong adds so much damage to your own, and your companion's. It also adds some extra mobility to an already very mobile class.

you get a much better selection of weapons by using STR (chug an elixir of hill giant strength if you need to) and not limiting yourself to just finesse weapons (basically only rapiers). Astarion is the perfect companion for this if you ascend him, as one of the perks is 1d10 necrotic damage to weapon attacks. be sure to take the "savage attackers" feat, as this rerolls all damage die, including the elemental die. throw in Helldusk gloves for additional 1d6 fire damage
