The Steam Deck is definitely a game changer, but I don't think it's really specific to Godot.
It uses a Proton compatibility layer that allows Windows executables to run on Linux natively. (This applies outside of Steam OS's big picture mode)
It doesn't matter what engine your game is made on, your game is most likely going to work.
This really benefits everyone, but it doesn't solve Godot's console porting problems.
Devs wanna go after a big audience, which Steam has, but Xbox, Playstation, and Switch are still very desirable, due to the high user base compared to Steam.
Third party is really the only option for Godot, and many people still don't want to deal with that.

Exciting! Also I dunno how to get started with gdscript, the manual is a tidy bit confusing, what do I do

I definitely see Steam deck as the more mature version of what iOS and Android gaming could have been if the parent companies were not as abusive about updating for version compatibility and licensing. It provides a lower barrier to entry and also the ease of use where a dev can make a full game with Godot on the steam deck hardware itself. Plus, with how lightweight the engine is in filesize, it makes smaller games/engines that much more appealing.

Just a note: you can use the steam deck as a full linux desktop pc without modifying the os at all, just press a button in steamOS so you can run other engines directly in it, it’s just not ideal compared to godot

Oh wow, I didn't know Unity updated its terms on publishing to consoles and the steam deck just got a lot more interesting.

There's a question that I have regarding the Steam Deck. Can it run games that don't run on Linux, like anything made in Unreal? I have Hat in Time on Steam, which doesn't run on Linux/SteamOS.

Great video!
I'm making a video on the steam deck right now, I have basically the same opinion as you. I think it will be a good thing both for indie devs and indie games! It's the perfect platform to play indie games. And Godot being able to export for Linux very easily will be a big plus for Steam Deck support.

The Steamdeck is playing suported Windows Games as well. Basically every development tool will be able to target SD. So nothing special about Godot here.
