RT scores are never accurate for series especially D+ series. They often review based on the first few episodes and almost every D+ Marvel or Star Wars show has a stronger opening than ending. Critics don’t seem to change their scores after watching the later episodes. Episode 7 of acolyte is rotten but only has 16 reviews. I feel like RT needs a different system for series

When the audience is more critical than the critics.

Its not as bad as the audience and not as good as the critics. Split it and thats what I feel is what it is.

Critics are looking for stuff that’s original and different. Audiences are looking for stuff that’s familiar. And The Acolyte, for all its flaws, was trying to go for something outside the usual Star Wars IP safety guards.

Plus there’s an entire online hate grifter market based around hating all contemporary Star Wars shows. That impacts audiences responses more than we’d like to acknowledge.

Episode 7 titled, Choice, is what broke The Acolyte’s season the same way The Bells broke Game of Thrones once Daenerys went mad. Or you can argue when Arya killed the Night King or when Season 7 came out. Choice was supposed to be the big reveal and it left more people confused. How could the other side of a flashback episode from a flashback episode make things more confusing and that’s what Ep. 7 did. It was so bad, Grace Randolph hated it and she’s known to praise bad content and trash good ones.

Sean Chandler did a ranking of every Star Wars series on Disney+ with The Mandalorian seasons being separated. His ranking is pretty close to mines.

Sean Chandler’s SW on Disney+ Rankings
1. Andor Season 1
2. The Mandalorian Season 1
3. The Mandalorian Season 2
4. Ahsoka Season 1
5. Obi-Wan Kenobi
6. The Mandalorian Season 3
7. The Acolyte
8. The Book of Boba Fett

Mines would be the same exact top 4, then maybe Mando S3 at 5th, Kenobi at 6th, Fett at 7th, and Acolyte at 8th. I can flip flop Mando S1 and S2. The S2 finale was incredible but I probably have rewatched S1 more. I didn’t hate Mando S3 that much to put it below Kenobi. General consensus is take the first two seasons of Mando and Andor S1, and throw the rest in the trash.

Wise points there Sean, all of them are true

It is fascinating how subjective pieces of media are. I enjoyed The Acolyte and would like to see where it goes. It’s not the best Star Wars show, but if it has me wanting to see what happens next then it’s doing something right.
If a show has me constantly checking my phone and can’t keep my attention, then it’s doing something wrong. That’s how I felt about the first half of Andor Season 1.

You have to be really, really special to trust critic reviews in 2024. Especially from a website known to filter already sold out critic scores.

Usually I trust audience score, but not this time for one reason. "Fans" were literally review bombing the show before it even came out. That tells me some of the hate for this show is undeserved. Granted I can't give my actual opinion on the show because I haven't watched it yet. Not because I don't want to watch it, but because I'm too busy watching other stuff. If I love or hate the show when I watch it, it's because I actually watch it, not because someone told me how "bad" or "good" the show is.

Critics can be bought and critics live in a bubble where they have the same opinions as everyone else, as for general audiences people are a lot more diverse in their thoughts towards a particular piece of media some may like it while others may hate it.

I'll probably get around to watching this show some day, but when I do subscribe to my "one month a year" of Disney+, this is not going to be one of my priorities. Having said that, I recall seeing some extremely strange patterns when regularly monitoring audience scores on websites like IMDb and RT in the mid-2000s and I haven't trusted audience scores since, nor will I again.

Most of the time critics aren't given the entire season. They're just given like the first 3 episodes

I never review shows. I did review The Acolyte out of spite for the critics, not for the show. Had I reviewed past Disney shows they would have fair similarly, with the great exception of Andor, which has toppled The Wire as my favorite show.

Can we make it a definitive rule to not review a show before the whole show is out?! This is getting crazy!

theFILMNERD

So then should rotten tomatoes not allow reviews to come in until the show has finished?

DarthEqualizer

I completely agree with you that it doesn't make sense how new tv shows are rated on Rotten Tomatoes. As for the audience reviews for The Acolyte, I think alot of it is probably review bombing but I also think alot of it is from people who genuinely don't like the show.

JaredGriffiths

The final episode of the Acolyte received a 76% with average critical rating of 6.7 out of 10. So, most critics like the series overall.

Maybe there should be a TV version of rotten tomatoes where have separate episodes get reviewed and by the end of the season the scores are tallied up for the entire season or series as times goes on.

seanyonthemic

Feel like it's due to how well critics well critique stuff that's their job while fans can critique but it's based off themselves that and and not every fan will will have the same rating while critic ratings usually have similar ratings with a selected few being different

I saw Acolyte. I thought it was fine. I feel like people are overreacting when they say its bad. It could be better, but I don't hate it
