Working as a game dev is stressful especially at AAA companies. Making indie games as a side project or main is much more relaxing

Friend of mine joined a small studio right out of uni, they had a big break with their silly little indie game, now the company has like 5 little sister companies and a dozen big projects in the works and just released a huge title that broke every expected metric. And because he got in early he's pretty high up in the ranks already.
Some people do get lucky.

Damn, Java is my main language I've been using to make games. C++ is harder for me right now. I barely understand wtf a pointer is or when I should be using one.

I'm afraid that at somepoint in the future I might regret not being a game dev or have years of experience in c++. This is because there might be some huge breakthrough in technology and gaming will be part of our daily lives.

Better to be an indie game developer than work for some scumbag AAA greedy company that will beat you up if you miss a task. Money is decent but never worth losing your sanity. It’s just like YouTube, you’re passionate and having fun making videos, you’ll enjoy it, even if you barely/ dont make any money. But once the money comes in, the passion starts to die as people become so fixated on metrics.

That's not really true. Some of the highest paid positions in my local market are game dev positions for lottery companies. They also make a royalty off every single spin on those lottery games.

Recently there's a case in my country where an indie game studio are abusing their employees to the point one or their junior dev has miscarriage. The employees are also complaining about mistreatment and overwork. It's really scary

Basically make your own studio with friends or give up and become software or web engineer.

I feel kind of wierd hearing this, i want to be a game developer, i have 2 years before i finish my college, so before that i am doing my hest to become the best at my skills. I know/am learning, unity engine, c#, blender, c++, opengl, java. Right now my focus is on making a game engine for my portfolio

Game dev are paid really well. There just no over time pay. And we work ourselves to death.
