Rabies doesn't make you fear water, it makes drinking water INCREDIBLY painful

This man looked at a bottle of water, took a slow breath knowing what would happen and tried to drink regardless.
Rest in peace you brave soul.

When a doctor explains the symptom as an emotion rather than an involuntary bodily response...

You probably should tell people that the patients are not actually “AFRAID” of water. It is the severe painful involuntary spasms that happen in their throat when they try to swallow which makes them LOOK like they have “hydrophobia”. 😉
That is also why people (and animals) eventually foam at the mouth, they cannot swallow their own saliva.

This man is a warrior for even drinking that water on his own

For those who asked what is that, it's spasms. Imagine you're hiccup, but 100 times stronger.
Painful or not

Growing up my dog Shiloh saved my life from a rabid raccoon. I was 3 and playing in my sandbox while my dad worked on the roof. He says all of a sudden he heard a loud smashing sound, and looked just in time to see my dog Shiloh (black lab mutt) breaking through a wooden screen door and go charging right towards me. We had only gotten her about 6 months prior, and to say my dad wasn't a fan was a massive understatement. She chewed only his shoes, shit in his room when training, and would always walk right in front of him driving him crazy lol. Anyway his first thought was she had rabies and was going to attack me cause she looked so crazy trying to get through that door. But then she ran right by me and intercepted the raccoon that was about 15ft away. I don't remember any of this, but my dad said it was extremely violent. He grabbed me and ran me inside and grabbed his gun. By the time he got back out Shiloh was just laying on the deck and the raccoon was gone. We brought her to the vet and by some miracle she didn't have rabies. The raccoon def had rabies, cause the game Warden had to shoot it a few houses down after someone else reported that it might have rabies when it was wandering around their yard covered in it's own blood from my dog. But after that my dad absolutely loved that dog. Always made sure Shiloh went with us kids everywhere we went, especially the woods. I had her from when i was 2, until i was 20. She was an amazing dog and best friend. I will never forget her.

I've heard that when symptoms start showing, you're as good as dead. Definitely one of most horrible ways to die.

The Hydrophobia occurs for 2 reasons.

1. Neurological damage to the nerves of the swallowing muscles, which generates spasms and painful contractions.

2.Transmission. The infection seeks to create a reservoir in the pharynx and mouth, the animal not being able to swallow its own saliva or rinse itself helps the replication of the virus, to that we add the extreme aggressiveness that allows transmission to other animals through bites.

It is Horrible and at the same time fascinating how the virus disables the functional capacity of a subject for reasons of replication, contagion and survival

The look in his eyes says it all. He is confused and doesn't understand what is happening. I hope the doctors did everything they could to make him comfortable. Rest in peace sir.

I saw a documentary about a girl who survived rabies. She was put into a medically induced coma to give her immune system a chance to beat the disease. She eventually made a more or less complete recovery!
