I had a cousin that was bitten by a rabid squirrel as a boy and my father in law was bitten by a rabid animal when he was a young man. This was in the days when you had to have 13 painful shots in the abdomen. When I was a kid, we were warned by parents and grandparents about trying to interact with wild animals.

For the record the mother and daughter in the last clip survived. They sought immediate medical attention once they were safe and both given a rabies shot.

To be clear, Racoons actually do come out during the day. If they are hungry or thirsty they will come out. Seeing one during the day is not just because it's sick or rabid. Always keep your distance from wild animals anyway. If you see one acting weird or sick, call animal control to assess.

One small thing I will add, a lot of the time when you see a raccoon during the daytime and it isn't acting super weird it is most likely a mother of a fresh litter. The babies require so much milk that mother raccoons will resort to searching for food to replenish her every chance they get day and night.

To clarify - a raccoon out during the day could just be a new mom (they hunt for food every 3 to 4 hours, around the clock).
Be sure to keep your distance regardless; but watch it to ensure they dont exhibit odd or aggressive behavior.

As a rule, you should go to a doctor and get all available shots if bitten by anything with teeth (including humans) because you never know what they're carrying.

My granddad saw various animals afflicted by rabies in his homestead. He dispatched them quickly with his shotgun. He didn’t hesitate or investigate, he’d learned by sight when an animal has it and just put down the poor animal before it runs amuck and bite other animals or people. He said you shouldn’t muck around with a rabid animal.

The girl who survived rabies was in a coma for two weeks, and when she came out of it, yes she had some brain damage and had to learn how to function again like walk and talk, etc. but she now lives a happy normal life she’s married, and just gave birth to twins a couple of years ago.

Sometimes raccoons are out in the daytime with their babies searching for food. I wouldn't get too close due to protective behavior regardless. Odd behavior is key.
