Francis Scott Key was a gifted amateur poet. Inspired by the sight of the American flag flying over Fort McHenry the morning after the bombardment, he scribbled the initial verse of his song on the back of a letter. Back in Baltimore, he completed the four verses and copied them onto a sheet of paper, probably making more than one copy. A local printer issued the new song as a broadside. Shortly afterward, two Baltimore newspapers published it, and by mid-October it had appeared in at least seventeen other papers in cities up and down the East Coast.

**The Star-Spangled Banner**
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
’Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.**

I am originally from the 🇵🇭 Philippines and immigrated 31 yrs ago to the United States and l have since considered USA as my original country. USA is the Philippines' mother country having granted us our independence. The Philippines 🇵🇭 laws and Consitution have all been based on the USA. In my high school, US history and geography was part of our curriculum and a must. Every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I love ❤️ this country more than some natural born citizens. Thank you 😊 💓 for sharing this video (I've seen it a few times) but I wanted to see how other foreigners think why we are so PASSIONATE of our American flag. God bless you both!!

I am a decendent of Francis Scott Key. My uncle Fred Key is the son on the Key Brothers who founded refueling airplanes in flight. Their planes are in the Smithsonian. This song is sacred to me and I wish it was still allowed in schools and the history of it in the curriculum so all Americans can understand it’s true meaning. Thank you for listening and sharing this video.

The spirit of the US anthem is still alive today in many MANY citizens no matter what the media portrays.

For some Americans this flag is life defining!

Not only is the Flag Never to be on the ground, it is never to be dipped to anyone unlike every other country's flag in the world. The American Olympic Team in 1908 had a bunch of large Irish Catholic New York Policemen on it. The tradition was that as the competing countries teams with their nation's flag and a placard with the country's name on it at the head passed the Royal Box they would dip their Colors in Salute to the Host Nation. The Flag and Placard Bearers were hired from the local area. The Largest Irish Cop pulled the Flag Bearer aside before the opening parade and told the Londoner "Look Boyo. If you dip that flag the only thing that will beat you to the Hospital is the lights on the Ambulance. That Flag dips to no earthly King!" Or words to that effect. The Flag was not dipped to the English Royal Family. This was a major scandal and started the Tradition that the American Flag is Dipped for NO ONE!

As an American patriot, I appreciate you two watching this. Today is Memorial Day in the states, where we remember and honor our fallen, starting with the forefathers, and on.

I'm a black American, the national anthem means everything to me even though my ancestors were bought to this country in chains. I enjoyed your reaction to how the song became our national anthem. I get goose bumps whenever I hear the song especially when Whitney Houston sings it.

This is why so many Americans like myself and many others place such value on our great flag, we understand the very high price that was paid for us to have that flag, I and many others are quite willing to fight, bleed, kill and die for that flag, and will do it without a second thought or a single regret.

This is why we do not kneel during the National Anthem. Sadly some do; but less and less as time goes by. Thank you for being so respectful! 🇺🇸

I'm German born. I now live in Texas. To me it's the most beautiful song. The sacrifices that our forefathers made to keep America free chilled and touched me deeply. Not all American know how our Anthem came about. If the knew, how dare the disrespect our flag and our Anthem by kneeling or burn our flag. Don't ever let our flag drag the ground. I hope and pray that the sacrifices our forefathers suffered was not in vain. Long and forever let America be free. I feel privileged and I'm very thankful to live in this country, and I always will honor the flag and live by the law, Thank you America for allowing me to live here. I love America, but I'm also proud being German my fatherland. I pray that my home country never again produces another Hitler and let them believe his believes.

Army veteran. Proud patriot. I can still well up when I hear the national anthem. I know the sacrifices that my fellow veterans have made. I respect them as all veterans should be respected.

I was watching an episode of King of the Hill and I saw a scene where Bill Dautrieve, a barber in the U.S Army, cried for our flag after he discovered it in his front yard torn, slightly burned, wet, and driven over, as he watched his fellow soldiers give the flag a ceremonial burning to honor the flag.
It reminded me of our love of that flag that waves over us as Americans everyday. I may have political views that don't align with democracy but I would still lay my life on the line for that flag.
Our Founding Fathers, those minutemen, those American soldiers, and patriots are why we are free from British tyranny and had to pay that price with their blood. Those men are why I am lucky to live in a country where I am free to choose to be who I want to be.
The freedom I was given wasn't for free, it's what makes it special. It's why I live my life thankful to those very men who chose to die standing than live kneeling.
