My wife's grandmother was newly 'in service' in the 1930s at a mansion house in some large city (not sure which). If she was dusting, cleaning, whatever, and a family member passed, she was obliged to stand and face the wall until they passed. Seriously.
On day 2, she found a shilling coin on a window cill. A seasoned fellow servant warned her not to touch it - it was a test of honestly. When 'Madam' checked that cill the next day, she found her shilling intact - in the form of a pile of 12 single pennies!
Her main recollection of those times was to dwell on what kind of nasty bodily substances might be in the meals served up to the posh dining tables of such abusive people. It certainly wasn't in the food 'liberated' below stairs.
