Let me know if you have any long-haul flight essentials that should be added to this list?? I am always looking to learn and try new things!

Being the person on a plane with a pen is my favorite. It makes me feel like a super hero, I never forget to bring 2. One for me and one to share.

Great list! For me, disinfecting wipes are a must. The minute I get on the plane I'm swabbing down the tray table, entertainment controls, armrests, and don't forget the seatbelt buckle. Just assume the previous person in your seat didn't wash his hands after using the washroom and you'll know what you need to do. I also like to take a small bag that can be used for garbage and some sort of clip to hold it onto the seat pocket in front of me (and I never, ever stick my hand into that seat pocket!). For an eye mask, look for one that has bugged-out eyes - it's much more comfortable to have something that isn't touching your eyelashes. If you have discomfort in your ears when flying, or don't know if you will (or if your children will), I highly recommend Earplanes ear plugs which slow down the air pressure changes. There is a children's version available. If you're using Earplanes you'll need to use the over-ear style of noise-cancelling headphones. Compression socks can be found in dark, solid colours - you might need to order online, but they exist. I like clothing that is super soft and has zippered pockets so I can keep small items close and not lose them while I'm sleeping. My flight uniform is a French terry cardigan with zippered pockets, and a pair of Eddie Bauer hiking pants with zippered pockets on the legs. One thing I have learned in many years of flying is that realistically, I am not going to retrieve anything out of my bag in the overhead bin during a flight. That bag is just for the things I absolutely need at my destination, even if my checked bag goes astray. Anything I need during the flight needs to be in one of those zippered pockets, so that includes single-use disposable toothbrushes, a sample size of dental floss, tissues, lip balm etc.

Instead of Meletonin, which leaves me groggy, I bring Chamamile tea bags and ask the attendant for hot water. I find it very effective in relaxing on a plane.

I’m a woman with a handbag. I always have a pen, simple analgesia, hand sanitizer, lip balm, my earbuds, dental floss, multi-tool, tissues, foldaway tote, and more.

I carry a travel first aid kit that has electrolyte replacement, anti nausea tabs, anti diarrhoea etc but that’s in my checked bag. Usually only needed in developing countries.

Never needed melatonin. And I take an aspirin before I board, and daily while sedentary and do all my leg exercises on the plane.

I always pack pain relievers especially if like me you're older. The ones coupled with a mild sleep agent are great on a long haul flight.

Great tips. RE: JET LAG… I am retired at 50 and travel between my homes in Houston Texas and Bangkok Thailand 4 times a year. (I’ve also been to about 80 countries.) The day before travel, I reset my watch and mind to destination time zone by not sleep. Airlines are super bad at keeping their whole inflight schedule to origin time zone, so you really have to have a personal plan for getting sleep, naps, food, etc. that will get you pre-acclimated by the time you arrive. 👏🏻 Thanks for sharing. 😃👍🏻🇺🇸🇹🇭

Another tip for flights....when they adjust the air pressure, if you get the pain in your ears? You can deliberately pop them. They train us on this in the Submarine Fleet. I think it's called "the desalva maneuver" but don't quote me on that.

But basically you take a deep breath, then you hold your nose closed with your thumb and index finger, such that you can't breathe through your nose, then you attempt to exhale through your nose. Do this until you feel one ear pop and then the other. Sometimes you have to do it more than once.

You do have to be careful, theoretically if you do it hard enough you'll pass out, but put just enough pressure that you can feel the pressure build up, that should be enough to pop them!

We have to adjust air pressure on the submarine sometimes when we change depth, that's why they train us to do that. 🙂

I ALWAYS travel with multiple pens and even sharpies. They have come in handy so many times!!!!

As a flight attendant for over 30 years, the pen issue bothers me. I always have several that I snag from the hotels that I don’t mind loaning to passengers, but for some reason they never feel like they want to give them back. Chances are, that’s why we ask you to borrow them from another passenger instead of from us, the airline does not provide them usually.

I always pack a small, handheld, battery-powered fan. The fan is helpful with temperature and smell adjustments. 😊 Sometimes I just want to feel moving air to counter any anxiety from mild claustrophobia. Also, a few recent flights were on airplanes with no overseat air vents. Last December a Korean Air flight was sweltering for the entire 9-hour flight (first leg of a 42-hour itinerary!).

ALWAYS pack a pen! I have had to loan my pen to several people on the plane to fill out forms. Remember a pen!

I always wear a soft fluffy Cuddl Duds winter infinity scarf- even in summer. I wash it in lavender so it smells nice, helps me sleep and can be pulled over my head to block out light or sound or protect me from germs if I lean against the wall and, most importantly, over my nose to block out the noxious farts that always seem to come out of the guy seated in front of me. Once I was seated next to a passenger with stinky feet who took their shoes off. 🤢 I was saved by the scarf.

You have the best information with examples and tips. Thanks. I made a list of the items to be sure to have for my upcoming oversea trip.

Personally, I would recommend taking magnesium glycinate along with the melatonin. The melatonin simulates the hormones that your body puts out to become sleepy, but the magnesium often helps you sleep deeper or longer because it relaxes your muscles, can reduce restlessness, and consequently reduce some of the stress/anxiety that comes with traveling.

A big item you talked about resonated with me: Lip Balm. I went to Borneo in 2006 to visit an orangutan rehabilitation center. I did not have a lip balm and was SO desperate. The awesome Singapore Airlines flight attendant gave me a packet of honey to put on my lips just to survive the rest of the trip. Ingenious and I lived to get back to Phoenix without losing my mind over my dry lip issue. BTW - best airline I've ever used in my travels.

They have little brushes that do not require water for brushing your teeth while in flight. So helpful since you cannot use the sink water in the bathroom of the plane. Also, most cosmetics can be found in stick or powder form which does not have any TSA rules. Sunscreen in stick form is the best invention.

One of my essentials for flying is a hand towel I roll up for a neck pillow. It fits perfectly in the open space behind my neck for a very restful sleep while sitting up.

Glad to see we already do most of what you mention. For ginger we take Gin-Gins brand, they are yummy and good for the tummy. We don't like to miss our ginger as we start each day with a ginger shot, a habit we developed while in Iceland last year. There are many health benefits to ginger.
