Lie models for the Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups began with Gromov’s 1981 paper on polynomial growth. Measure-based Lie models were used by Breuillard-Green-Tao to show that
finite approximate groups belong to the nilpotent world. I will discuss these models, and some extensions to approximate equivalence relations and approximate subgroups in a metric setting.
