More than 40 years ago I was an officer with Florida’s Marine Patrol, their sea-going state police. A major concern for them was hurricanes, particularly storm surge at high tide. Florida has very little elevation in most areas. Ten or twelve feet of water pushing inland means real trouble. Getting out early is a smart move. I wouldn’t wait.

I just saw a TV weatherman look at the hurricane forecast, become emotional, then nearly breakdown and weep. I call that a clue as to how bad this storm may become. I’d leave even if I had to hitchhike.

From WC, My wife, kids, and I lived in FLA from 1964 to 1980, I believe we had 2 Hurricanes but even with a lot of wind and rain we seemed to do o’k. We lived in Orlando and our house was on higher ground, partly thanks to my Dad who advised that before you buy you go visit house/land during a heavy rain storm! If the property comes through it with out water on the property you should be alright! Also our house was cement block with 2 by 6’s in the roof! It seems that in the 1970’s houses started being built more like houses further north, which basically means not as strong! If I were to return to FLA now I would watch where I built to make sure it would not flood and I would build with cement block again with brick, stucco, or something like that for beauty, and certainly with 2 by 6’s in the roof, especially if insurance may no longer be available in Florida!
