"Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is warning residents ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall that if they stay in the evacuation area, they will die.

“The No. 1 message, as it has been for several days now, is that you need to prepare, do whatever you need to do and then get out of the evacuation zones,” Castor told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Monday evening."

I'm a 69 year old janitor who works at the VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, Pinellas County, Florida, just west of Tampa. Let me be clear about this: FEMA HAS BEEN HERE SINCE AND EVEN DAYS BEFORE HURRICANE HELENE, AND THEY NEVER LEFT. Our whole part of the state was shut down. All schools, businesses, and public services were ordered to shutter along with Fire & Rescue and Police all on stand-down. And yet, all the while the wind and water were ripping through our homes, Electricians in utility trucks could be seen driving around, risking their lives, trying to keep the power on for as long as possible. For me. For us. We, the people are facing down the proverbial perfect storm. We don't care what color you paint the cannon that is aimed at our lives. We're not memes, talking points, or crusaders. We're ordinary, American people entering a new reality and on an unimaginable scale. Along with others, we've been hurt quite a lot already and the worst is yet to come. What we need most right now are some humanities. FEMA has and continues to support us, but we sure could use the rest of the country on our side about now, too. I always thought that was what we were supposed to be about. Americans. Please don't forget us after the storm and when we're no longer front page news. If Milton kills me, that's on me. But if you're not paying attention, that's on you.

Just spent an hour on the phone with a buddy in the Tampa vicinity. They have a certified shelter they are going to tomorrow, so hopefully they will be OK. I've been to Florida a few times, and it's beautiful - but you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

It's now a category 5 again. Highly dangerous.

Former Floridian here: telling people that they will die is the bare minimum required of messaging to try and get Floridians to evacuate. Anything less, and hardly anyone takes it seriously. Props to that mayor for being so direct, but I'm still not sure how many people it'll actually convince to evac.

This is what happens when you enthusiastically deny science for perceived superiority. Somebody is certainly going to pay and ignorance is ground zero.

I worry for the people who can't afford to leave, and who aren't physically able to leave. 😔

Have we tried more fossil fuels subsidies and less regulations to fix these problems?..

Sarcasm heavily implied.

What about the poor? Those who cannot afford to flee?

Florida should let the market fix hurricanes

There is some guy who claims he’s going to ride it out on his boat in the Tampa Bay. He was interviewed by local news. I lived most of my life in Florida on the east coast. I can tell you from experience hurricanes, all hurricanes, can and will cause catastrophic damage. Had part of my neighbor’s shed fly through an upstairs bedroom window during Hurricane Frances in 2004. So board up and get OUT! And please take your pets.

a co-worker's best friend lives in Florida and runs one of the shelters for those that can't leave. this is the 3rd time they've had to open the shelter recently and it is already very crowded. Reports are that the ground is still saturated so can't handle anymore surge water. On top of that - all the debris from previous storms is outside what remains of structures waiting to be picked up.... the structures have not been repaired and are weakened where they can't stand much more... now the debris will either be a flying projectile OR will get washed/shoved back in from the new surge.

Milton is a pretty wimpy name for a hurricane. Megatron would have been better.

Sarasotas commissioner told his constituents “to write their names on their arms with permanent marker so they could identify their bodies.”
She’s not the only one giving that dire warning.
