DJI Mavic Air 2 After The Hype | 30 Days In Review

Now that the hype from the Mavic Air 2 launch has calmed down I have made an updated review after now flying and using the Mavic Air 2 for more than 30 days in a way that I would normally use my drones. Early reviews can be tricky as you have limited time to test out the features and functionality not to mention apps and firmware usually are still in beta. Now that I have had a good amount of time on the sticks I do have some opinions on the DJI Mavic Air 2 both good and some features that are missing and need work. The Mavic Air 2 is by far the best drone for the money on the market currently and is a great choice for both new pilots and professionals.

I have a mavic 2 pro and I chose to get an Air 2 because I wanted to travel lighter with something more compact it was and the fact it had low noise propellers and occusync was a plus. The HDR mode is the mode I use the most as it’s the easiest to grade and produces the least noise. Although the quality of the 2 pro can never be compared to when it comes to noises and dynamic range, but it took a lot of playing with to expose it right and the auto HDR mode makes it a breeze on the Air2. The photos that come from the drone are also great even for processing in lightroom. I use the 48mp now and then to get a larger panoramic view instead of using the panoramic mode as it’s just faster to get the shots. Over for someone that travels it’s the ideal drone to get shots done without fiddling about with settings and modes...

Had the dji mini but less than 2wks of having it it overheated twice! Back to Best Buy & upgraded to THE MAVIC AIR 2!! No issues & more features! As a matter of fact this drone is completely awesome!!!

Have they added an update to control the downward sensors? I usually have mine on, but I turn off the feature that uses the downward sensor when landing as it makes it much easier to hand land because you can reach up and grab the drone without it trying to fly upward away from your hand.

Thanks for doing a follow up review, after you have had plenty of air time with it. This type of review is the kind that are most important to me. You had it longer than I have, but I'm very pleased with the Mavic Air 2 so far.

Great video again thank you. Question for you, I’m torn between the air 2 and the pro 2 with one inch sensor, I’ve had a year with a 4k phantom 3 which was great but cumbersome, so either will be better for travel. My question is about quality of video, is the pro 2 a worthwhile buy now? I can get a pro 2 for about a grand which is a similar price to the air 2 so again cost is not the issue. What are your thoughts?

I got my MA2 2 weeks ago and can't stop flying it. I have the Spark, Mini (1), and now the MA2. This is by far the best money spent on a drone I have made. The Occu sync makes all the difference in the world. And this will fly rock solid in some very strong winds.

Excellent Review! I’ve had mine just a few days now. I love it but I have a Question. I was using Active Track Trace with success in one part of the park and then when I went to a different location and tried to activate it again it would Not Lock on Me. I gave up for the day and came home. I was in a more confined space, about 15 feet away and about 10 feet elevation to stay under the tree branches. Do you know if there is a minimum distance and altitude necessary to activate Active Tracking? Many Thanks!

I haven't done very much with mine worth publishing yet, however I have quickly figured out the workarounds for the first two issues. A janky workaround for the problem with the gimbal speed going up and down I found out toggling from tripod to sport or sport to performance mode will also change the speed of how fast the gimbal goes up and down. As for the drone not liking reflective surfaces, again switching over to sport mode helps overcome that. I learned that one indoors on my very first flight because of drone refuses to go from a carpeted floor to a tile floor because it just thinks that there's an obstacle there.

Coming from a holy Stone hs700, every aspect has been an improvement, and there is so much more for me to learn. Now if only the damn weather would cooperate.

Love my MA2. One annoying thing is that Quickshots are only able to shoot in 1080p. When creating a montage of 4K footage that includes 1080p Quickshots, software such as iMovie downscales the entire project to 1080p. Without purchasing other editing software, this means either eliminating Quickshots from a montage, or settling for a lower resolution video :/ Do you think this is something DJI would address in a firmware update?

I've noticed that the gimbal speed is variable with the dial. One can go slow or fast, it does require a super human steady finger.
