Every now and again, America decides it wants to amend its constitution. However, passing an amendment is difficult, as was intended by the founding fathers when they drafted the constitution. Around 12,000 amendments have been proposed since the constitution was ratified in 1788, but only 27 have been adopted. So what were those failed amendments and why were they unsuccessful?

Its kinda nuts how they managed to get an amendment for the prohibition, considering how difficult it is. So fast too.

Term Limits need to happen. We have members of congress who are in their 80's, and have no idea where they are anymore.

There should be amendment that requires congress and the Senate to read every bill out loud in its entirety before they can vote on it

Worth noting that 10 of the 26 ammendments that have been ratified were the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791. So only the other 16 have been spread across the 232 years (!!!) since then.

I would say the 18th amendment is probably also a failed amendment considering it was later voided by another amendment

Common theme: "Despite overwhelming voter support for the 'Don't Kick Puppies' bill, which prohibited Congress from kicking puppies, the amendment was soundly defeated by Congress - who went on to kick MANY more puppies."

Imagine where we'd be today if that one senator had voted for the balanced budget amendment.

Term limits and one that makes hiding bills inside of bills illegal.

ERA is not quite dead! Although it expired the due date, enough states have now ratified it to become effective. Congress could pass a resolution removing the deadline, which had been done before. The validity of this action is up for debate, but it’s still in the air

Oh damn this is your first video. You covered a good topic already. I have not seen any history topical channel covered something like failed amendments before so this was pretty refreshing!

Keep up the good work!

The bar should be high, it should be difficult to change the constitution. Only that which is so important as to pass in all measures should be allowed to be integrated into law.

The difficulty of adding amendments is a very good thing. If it were easier, than a momentary swing in political power to either side could impact the nation for decades/centuries to come, and some very bad or poorly considered ideas could enter in. The amendments truly need to be a near-universal consensus, as it is the ultimate law governing every American.
