Video Transcript:
OBS Studio is great free, open-source software that lets you easily capture audio and video, and even stream. However, if you're just getting up and running with OBS you'll need to spend a little time getting it set up just right. One common problem users run into is getting a black screen when trying to perform a display capture. The good news is that this is often an issue associated with your computer's graphics settings that can be resolved in a few minutes.

Now let's walk through the steps to fix getting a black screen when trying to perform a display capture in OBS Studio.

Step 1. Click the "Start" icon and then click "Settings" to open the Settings menu. Click "System" on the Settings screen. Choose "Display" in the menu on the left side of the screen, and then click "Graphics Settings" in the list of options on the right side of the screen. You'll land on the Graphics Settings screen.

Step 2. Click the "Choose an App to Set Preference" drop-down, and then choose "Desktop App." I saw other people advising you to select "Classic App," but this wasn't in my list of options, and choosing Desktop App worked just fine.

Step 3. Click "Browse." Navigate to where your OBS Studio executable file is located. The default location where my file was located is on the screen. Select your OBS Studio executable file, and then click "Add." You'll return to the Graphics Settings screen, where you'll now see OBS Studio in this list.

Step 4. Click "Options" associated with OBS Studio to open the Graphics Preference menu. Choose "Power Saving" in this menu, and then click "Save." Now you'll be able to capture your screen in OBS Studio with no issues.

I experienced the black video in OBS just occasionally. After many useless attempts, I realized that it happened when I had disconnected/connected external monitors or a projector before recording.
Final tip:
BEFORE STARTING YOUR RECORDING, ALWAYS DO A TRIAL RECORDING AND WATCH IT
(mostly if you have connected/disconnected an external video device)

omg, thank you so much! It is such a pain to find a good tutorial and yours is the best. Good video segment titles (whatever the text thing is called next to the video length) so I can skip the intro and get into the quick of it! You were also good at speaking, I didn't have to sit there and wait thru any side references. Thanks a lot!

I to get black screen. I am streaming with OBS to run a live stream with YouTube. Followed the instructions here. However after streaming for a while the OBS screen returns to black.
On YouTube side there are no warnings says 'excellent connection' and the on OBS the screen when it snaps to black I loose the feed. These instructions are perfect. Just that I got a lingering difficulty.

Dear my power save option is the same as high performance: nvidia Gtx 1050ti. There is no intel cpu option to select. I have looked in the Nvidia control panel to try and find an option to fix this but I'm not seeing one. Can you help ?

This didn't work for me. I had to go into the NVidia settings, Manage 3D Settings, Program Settings. (I got to it to it via the Task bar.) I added the OBS software to the list and selected "High performance NVIDIA processor" for the graphics processor. In OBS, I think I had to delete the Screen Capture source I'd set up and create a new one, but everything worked properly after that.
