There is no single mechanism that will definitively determine which hand you will prefer. Technology and further studies will continue to help shed light on the subject. What is known is that it essentially comes down to genes and biological asymmetry in the human brain. What tends to be true in so many other aspects of human preference, handedness also seems to be more of a spectrum. You have some people who strongly prefer right or left handedness, and some that can use both with the same level of comfort. Then there are countless people who have different degrees of ability using their non-dominant hand.

To those complaining about the joke at the end: I have some rare medical conditions that cause great hardship in my life and I love it when I hear a good joke about them.
The joke was funny. Stop treating people with something wrong with them as weak people that need to be coddled, that's infinitely more insulting than a good joke.

I'm left-handed and my favorite way to start a conversation when I see that someone is also a lefty is to say, " Ahhh...a lefty! Are you musically and/or artistically inclined?" They usually are and I love to hear other people tell me their hobbies!

The joke was funny. Get over it. People with mental disorders just want to be treated normally. They don't want to be babied and defended at every turn. I'm diagnosed with depression & GAD, but I love a good suicide joke. The depression just makes dark humor even funnier.

I understand the desire to protect those you see as the victim of a joke, but that just promotes the idea that people with mental disorders are too weak to live in normal society.

I grew up as a righty, but taught myself to write lefty a few years ago. Playing guitar for almost 20 years first helped.

I was taught in pre k to be ambidextrous. Now I prefer to write with my right and but can definitely do it with my left too. I also have a strong preference for doing certain things with my right and certain things with my left. Such as pouring coffee with my left hand and most fine motor skills with my left.

My grandparents are both right handed. They had 4 children. The 2 oldest are both right handed and the 2 youngest are left handed. My left handed aunt married a man who is also left handed, their son is right handed.

What if I do everything with my right hand except writing, and my handwriting is terrible?
I tried to write with my right hand, but it's even worse.
Basically, I'm just a crappy lefty.

My mom made be ambidextrous from childhood. Martial arts helped with that. A person can practice and become ambidextrous. I can write, tie my shoes, and shoot equally well with both hands due to intentional practice.

As a leftie I don't mind it too much except when it comes to video games. Especially nintendo titles that utilize the DS/3DS touchscreen or wiiu gamepad (which the wiiU is obsolete so we'll see if control schemes on the switch have any issues). Some shooter titles also are a bit annoying without a southpaw mode. I can do just about anything with my right hand excluding writing. Door handles (not knobs) that turn only a specific way are a bit annoying.

Writing is the only thing I really prefer to use my right hand for, everything else I do with both. I probably could teach myself to write with both hands if I really wanted to.

I beg to differ about the retraining business. It might be successful in a few people, but more are damaged for life. My uncle, now in his eighties, still stammers from having been forced to become right-handed as a child. George VI of England was another case. Most right-handers would probably develop stammers, too, if forced to be left-handed.

When I was younger, I read a story that used left handedness as a metaphor for homosexuality (it was about a kid who was ambi in a righty world). Just thought that would be nice to know.
