Why so many people are single right now

More people than ever are single in Canada — with the biggest drop in romantic relationships among those in their mid- to late-20s. That's all according to Statistics Canada, which looked at relationships across the country over a 40-year period, between 1981 and 2021.

So why is that, and what does being single look like today?

Something not mentioned in the video is financial barriers for 20-somethings: I moved back home after college because I can't afford to live on my own. I'm far from the center of the city, making it harder to meet new people and maintain connections. Also, I don't really want to bring someone home with my family there, especially at the early stage of a relationship. This makes dating a lot less appealing during this stage in life. I know A LOT of people are in the same situation as me. Not to mention, lower incomes for gen z means reduced frequency going out. A modest night out (uber + drinks) means at least $100. I think financial barriers for gen z and millenials is a big topic that CBC overlooked in this video.

In British Columbia, couples who have been living together for two years share the same legal rights as married couples, including a 50/50 split of debts and assets—excluding pre-relationship property, inheritances and gifts. Nonsense like this has also contributed to considerably more people now choosing to be single.

Attachment issues, unhealed wounds, and low pain tolerances makes relationships more difficult/painful then many think they are worth. Some feel it better to remain single and get your needs met outside of a relationship - less messy, lower stakes and less requirements/expectations.

Being single is not the issue as opposed to being lonely. One can be single and have friends and people that can provide support. Lonely is very different, one could have plenty of colleagues yet no one to talk to. This is what as a society we should look into.

Because, for decades, the institutions we used to trust have been diluting the value of family as a key anchor and support for society. BLM is one good example but there are many other.

what you seem not to mention is how men get screwed and the court has a major lean toward women. the whole men going their own way movement is proof of how men are not putting up with women taking advantage of them anymore and that caused women to rethink do i really need a man. and for those divorsed women welcome to becoming independant and loving it. when you meet the right person sure marriage can be great but unfortunately that is not the case in many cases.
