Firstly, the buckler was the most used shield in the castle age. And that was because it was used for general living activities. For example, you sleep with a buckler under your pillow. You also cook in the kitchen with the buckler on your belt. Furthermore, you do your gardening and stable cleaning with your buckler on your belt. As a result, the buckler was so popular because it was so easy to carry around while your doing your regular daily activities. And I could not imagine carrying a large shield while you do every day tasks.
