NASA New Major Plan Change on Artemis 4 "Likely Using Starship “Option B”!

========
NASA has just restored plans to include a lunar landing on its Artemis 4 mission to the moon later this decade!
In a presentation on Oct. 28 at the American Astronautical Society’s Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium here, Mark Kirasich, deputy associate administrator for Artemis Campaign Development at NASA, outlined the series of Artemis missions on the books for NASA through the late 2020s. That included Artemis 4, which he described as the “second time people land on the moon” under Artemis after the Artemis 3 mission.
However, earlier this year Kirasich and other NASA officials said that NASA was not planning to include a lunar landing on Artemis 4. Instead, they said the complexity of the mission, which will involve the delivery of the I-Hab habitation module to the Gateway on the first flight of the upgraded Block 1B version of the Space Launch System, precluded a lunar landing.
Kirasich confirmed after the panel that NASA had decided to include a landing on Artemis 4 again.
Besides that, he also revealed that the mission would likely use the “Option B” version of SpaceX’s Starship lander.
NASA announced in March it would exercise Option B in its Human Landing System (HLS) contract with SpaceX, which originally covered an Option A lander that SpaceX will demonstrate on the Artemis 3 mission. Option B would fund changes to the Starship lander to support more ambitious missions in the later “sustainable” phase of Artemis, and include a second demonstration mission.
Simply put, the contract is an extension of the Artemis program and will see SpaceX develop a spacecraft capable of sustaining human presence on the Moon.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for Nasa, but SpaceX leaves me breathless, at times?

we all know... NASA will end up upgrading Spacex to be Option A... only a matter of WHEN. LETSGOOO SPACEX!!!!

I have to wonder what is going to shape up as SpaceX will likely start landing on Luna in the next few years with or without NASA. That would look pretty crazy if NASA has a contract with SpaceX to land on Luna, SpaceX is doing landings, but NASA can't get a plan together to do a mission that includes landing on Luna.

I think this is intended to hold SpaceX back

Thanks for continuing to make these videos so often! Watching them everyday is a huge mood boost and motivator for me. Definitely my favourite channel. Keep up the great work!

I like how Space X doesn't seem to have the $ overruns with NASA Like these other companies seem to have

Clear, concise information delivered with elegance and clarity. More of this. Keep it up.

With the Artemis program continuing to depend on SLS I wonder how sustainable the human presence on the Moon will be if they can’t get the current $4.1 billion price tag per launch down. A regular launch cadence should help but there is still more development money that needs to be poured into the vehicle to upgrade its capabilities and the history of cost overruns on SLS doesn’t give cause for optimism.

Another very good episode. I wasn't aware that so much work on potential lunar landing solutions is still going on across a number of companies - I think this is money well spent.

I love how NASA always talks about the SLS takes astronauts “to the moon”, and “back to the moon”. I wish they would just say “lunar orbit”.

Very sad that after the Apollo program and Artemis program now with so much technology that there were no crew on board and they won't be putting a Luna lander on the Moon yet.

its a shame that so many companies wasted their time with the blue origin engines. they may or not be a great engine but at what point does it mater if they never get completed. blue origins seems to do nothing but let everyone down and then sue everyone because of lack of faith.

I’ll be very happy to see this beast launch. However, I don’t understand why they don’t just launch the booster first, then catch and place it back on the pedestal.

Why risk losing both a booster and a starship on the first attempt? If it explodes, and both vehicles self-destruct, the damage will be so much worse than if they launch just the booster first.

The should land near the apollo module to close down the sceptics

~ 3:10 - And herein lies the greatest risk. Boeing almost killed the SLS in the first place, now its Bechtel's turn with ML2. 😞

A very good video in comparative lay terms. Thanks for making these regularly and putting them out.

It's difficult to attach much credibility to NASA's SLS/Orion/Artemis program. Too little, too late. While one is glad that the Starship is supposed to play a role in Artemis 4, there is much curiosity over whether or to what extent SpaceX is planning it's own, concurrent program for lunar access, independent of whatever NASA might be doing?

Space Ex could just build "Connestoga" a landing technology that uses scaled down raptors. Comon fuels, common engine theory, and scalability. The nucear powere space craft looks like the might be able to partner with space x as an inbettween cargo hauler if they can have prperly built craft to manage the space health issues (0-G, Radiation, long term food, etc.)

Von Braun is pronounced Von Brown. The German diphthong 'au' is pronounced like English 'ow'. BTW, braun means the colour brown.
