Ukrainian engineers 'build DIY missile to fool Russian air defences'

Ukrainian engineers claim they have designed a “people’s missile” that can be built in an average front garden with almost double the range of the US-supplied Himars rocket.

The missile, which uses the same technology as the German V1, is essentially a motor-powered steel tube attached to a pair of glider wings and fired from a catapult.

The anti-Russian Vidsich protest group behind the design, dubbed Trembita in Ukrainian, says it can be produced cheaply from everyday materials.

A graphic released explaining the technology shows up to three of the rockets fitting inside a one-car garage.

These are the good old German V1 missiles! Love them and they really scare the sheet out of the enemy.

even if the missile cant hit a target or do damage just having a very cheaply made decoy up in the air is extremely useful, if they can get russia to fire all their sams its a lot easier to get aircraft and actually effective missiles through the defenses

Ukraine was the basis of technological production in the USSR. All ballistic missiles, aviation, ships and other things were produced in Ukraine. A couple of years ago, space rockets were also produced for US companies.

War times really do breed some of the most amazing technological advances.

Good idea. That strategy of sending decoy will have an impact on air defence around the world.

Love that pulse jet engine sound. It's terrifying.

Colin Furze would be proud of the pulse jets

The impressive improvisation abilities of Ukraine’s people to adapt, restore function, improvise, and to create something new has been demonstrated beyond expectation.

V1 missiles are back to active duty, what next the V2 & Yamato!?

They could use a simple circuit computer like a raspberry pi computer to help guide it and maybe implement a cheap thermal camera.

with a catapult they are in the medieval age Ukraine?

Wait, do we not have thousands of decoy missiles already? That’d be a great startup idea to sell to the military, an entire factory preparing cheap missiles for the sole purpose of depleting anti air weapons.

Actually good idea - Putin’s thugs will have to respond to these missiles attacks using up what air defence capabilities they have left - it’s the same problem Israel has when Palestinians launch home made cheap missiles - Israel has to use expensive and time consuming to produce air defence missiles.

Best wishes to Ukraine her Armed Forces and People 🇺🇦🇬🇧

It’s cool how the pulse jet is back in combat for the first time since ww2

Even if they don't work hitting targets, they will force Russians to waste lots of expensive air defense missiles, well done...

Fascinating - but it would be even more so if we were at least told something about how it is made, and how it actually works!
