The Dwarf Thrór was king of Erebor, and brought an era of prosperity to his kin, until the arrival of Smaug the Dragon. Drawn by the amount of gold that the Dwarves have amassed, Smaug destroyed the nearby town of Dale before driving the Dwarves out of Erebor. Thrór's grandson, Thorin Oakenshield, sees King Thranduil and his Wood-elves on a nearby hillside and is dismayed to find them taking their leave rather than aiding his people. This makes Thorin develop an everlasting hatred of Elves.

This prologue is the best part of the whole trilogy. Fantastic story telling.

Smaug must have been high for weeks after claiming all the gold and gems of Erebor. He must have been the happiest dragon whoever lived at that point.

0:25 This was the effect of the dwarven rings of power. Sauron intended for the rings to turn the dwarf lords into ringwraith slaves like the Naz'gul but they didn't work because of the inherit hardiness of dwarves. What they did instead is amplify the greed and resolve of the dwarves so they would be lead to horde great treasure troves that had the unfortunate effect of attracting jealous races like dragons.

Some people may not like the Hobbit trilogy, but the flashbacks are really nice. the fall of Erebor, the battle of Azanulbizar, I just love them.

3:35 i love the idea of Thranduil mobilizing a bunch of troops, going all the way to Erebor and going: "nah i don't wanna do this guys, let's turn back"

3:44 This is one thing I like about these movies. They delve deeper into the feud between elves and dwarves. Even the Hobbit book didn't do this, since Tolkien explained it further in his later works. I see the Hobbit movies as not just an adaptation of a fairy tale that to many is the introduction to Tolkien (including me). I see them as an expansion to Tolkien's world on the big screen. This is still a tale of a Hobbit leaving his home to explore the world, but it's also the tale of an ancient evil trying to regain its power, and the races of Middle Earth uniting to defend their homes.

God I want a movie dedicated to the Dwarves not only to see what life was like in the Halls of Erebor but also to see how the rest of this fateful battle played out, to see how the Dwarves perished inside of their keeps

Even if the elves decided to help, they won't stand a chance against a dragon unless they have plot armour.

I really like the difference of Smaug's flame from the 2nd movie. In this movie, Smaug's flame has nothing to consider, so the flame looks heavier, pretty like napalm bombing or lava.( 2:05 ). But in the 2nd movie, he doesn't want to melt his gold, so his flames look light, more like giant flamethrower, which is strong enough, but not enough to melt his precious golds. I think it's similar in 3rd.

The Hobbit movies may have more than their fair share of flaws. But the one thing they really nailed was the dragon scenes. Any scene with Smaug was genuinely epic and suspenseful (especially the scene where Bilbo first wakes him up). I just wish the supposedly all powerful dragon had survived longer in the final movie and didn't get killed off in the first five minutes

This scene was made before they decides on what Smaug would look like. This was when they were thinking of Smaug's appearance to be that of a regular four legged dragon. They edited this scene to match his appearance for future releases of the movie. Not for sure if the first copies of the movie still have this scene as it was originally was. I know the scene in the extended version of the movie isn't like this.

3:53 elves aint dumb enough to fight a dragon with their arrows. The decision not helping the dwarves was common sense.

Thorin is a pretty badass. In the first part of these videos, Thranduil came to Erebor to get the jewels of Lasgalen, the dwarves refused to give them to him. Thorin didn't object to that, but when Smaug attacked Erebor and drove the dwarves out, why did he ask Thramduil for help. A beggar
