so true about theory. One day my mom asked me to show her some songs on the guitar, old old country type stuff. I listened to the songs she wanted, figured out the cording wrote it all down for her in tabs, then she asked me a question, how did I know what chords that were used. I said i don't know, I just hear the rhythm and the tone and seem to know what chord it uses. As I don't know the first thing about reading music, but it got me to a point of me asking myself the same question. How do you know when where how to pick a key or the beat of a song. I had no idea, so where do you go from there? Well i got interested in playing small lead lines, but even though I could find the key or chord to play in, my scales sucked. So I dove into learning scales, but not the theory because, as I said to my mom, you don't need to know the theory just the play. Well again that didn't work so well in learning lead licks or scales. My scales sounded dead, no life or story line to them. As i noticed other players including you, there was always a certain type of tone to your licks and rhythm, but I couldn't quite gather what it was. Until it dawned on me, that I had to learn some theory because that was the basis in all scales and licks. Theory gives you an idea on the way to play a lick or scale without making it sound lifeless. But in order to play a lick over a chord, one has to know where the root note of that scale that is playable to that chord. I found that learning theory helped in learning licks and scales. Once I got that idea in my head, I always think before I start a chord progression, where is the scales and what scale shape is compatible with the chords I am playing. I don't always play into a lick when cording but the theory taught me to think ahead of my chords. As always thank you for your help, rock on and be kind to our animals.

+yourguitarsage I'm curious, have you even seen or played with Rocksmith 2014? That has made a huge difference in my playing. It makes you want to practice because it makes playing guitar a game.
