I Raised Massive Rhino Beetles

Rhinoceros Beetles (Xylotrupes gideon philippinensis) are truly some of the most spectacular and majestic creatures of the insect world. This is why I was thrilled to add some beetle larvae to our growing menagerie of creatures in the 'Antiverse' (my Ant Room).

Back in October, when I first got the scarab beetle grubs, I prepared growth chambers for them, to house them as they developed into beetles. I was told they were going to emerge by Christmas time, but when both Christmas and New Year passed with no beetle in sight, I finally made the decision supported by your votes, to go in and look for them! What we discover in this video will truly amaze you, as well as my grand idea for us to have some fun with a beetle tournament.

I had a rhino beetle like that once.

One day I was playing with it and showing it to my dormmates at my boarding school (which is where I found it). It was so fun to look at it crawl around on my arm and scare my friends with it. It was all fun and games until my friend was holding it, letting it climb his arm when... it’s shell opened spreading it’s giant wings. It stood still for a few seconds. What little time we had to react, some of my friends ran, some stood still cold in fear, some screamed. The one with the beetle on his hand tried not to panic. And then... it flew. Buzzing around, the dorm everyone was in chaos until it landed on my friends towel where someone picked it up and make sure it didn’t go of flying again. We decided it was time to let it go at that point. It was fun playing with him, but you know as they say... if you love it let it go

I'm suddenly addicted to bugs. Which is so weird because I'm a bug-o-phobic. BIG time. I despise all insects. Yet here I am. Cheering for insects and actually smiling when they do well. So strange. Lordy, I may end up with an ant colony of my own one day soon.
