I'm watching a lot of interview prep videos to prepare for a second interview tomorrow, and the answers to questions I asked in the first round are helping me prepare now. In the first round I asked what the ideal characteristics would be for a candidate to be successful at the job and fit well onto the team, so if they ask me why they should hire me or why I'm ideal for the position, I'll highlight those exact qualities and give examples.

I've had a fairly non-linear career path so far, so I always try to work that into my answer to this question (or similar ones) in a way that showcases my unusual career journey as a strength. I talk about how my background allows me to approach this position from a variety of different angles and explain that this might set me apart from someone who has only ever worked in that specific field.

This question gives me pause to wonder if I’m still interested in working with the manager, team, and/or company. Asked this way, the question it is off-putting and one-sided. It attempts to maneuver the candidate into a position to defend and convince people (interviewers) of their value vs. inviting further conversation to explore mutual fit and validate potential for both the candidate and employer to deliver reciprocal value. Yes, it’s a fairly commonly asked interview question. It also might signal the culture of the organization — how it treats the power dynamics between it, job candidates, and employees. Prepare an answer for it AND note the (potential) red flag. Candidates are interviewing the company as much as the company is interviewing them, each articulating their value and contribution from a place of esteem and self-worth vs. defending it.
