I've gotten this question once, and on the inside I scoffed. Immediately lost interest in the job. The level of narcissism needed to ask this question astounds me. Meanwhile, the next job I interviewed for didn't ask this absurd question and presented me an offer with 50% higher pay. Because they understood they're not doing me a favor, I'm the one with the skills they need.

When I was asked this question in an interview, I said - "I am not going to give you a text book answer. As far as I am concerned, for me, it's purely business. You have a project in pipeline and you need to bill the client. And if client is paying a few hundred USD a day, they would definitely want a reliable and experienced person who knows what he/she is doing and can do it in a set time and budget with highest of the quality. I think I can pull that off. But not just for this company. But for any of those million companies out there, who are willing to honor my pay expectations and facilitate a healthy working environment."

This way, it shows that we are equally in control and is also a kind reminder that it's purely business not just for the employer but also the employee.

I got the job. ;) And the pay I expected.

If the goal is to do well in an interview, then this is probably really good advice. Although if I was interviewing someone, ide rather them be real with me than follow a prescribed guideline.
I cant help but to feel fake if I did this. The idea of "selling myself" just feels wrong. I don't like the idea of competing for success, even in an interview for the job, at the expense of the success of other people.
