Another way to look at it is supernatural debt cancellation. Reconciliation. Each time Peter denied Christ he basically took a step away from Him. Jesus asked him 3 times to give him an opportunity to be realigned. To me what that looks like in everyday life...we work in antiChrist environments, by the time we get home were drained. Once we praise and worship we feel His peace again, we are realigned. The word is awesome. We will never run out of things to study and share🙌🏽🙏🏾💯🔥

We are often asked things many times. This is not because Jesus does not know the love for Him within our hearts, but because in answering, we have the chance to know our love for Him, too. Hearing our own statements spoken by our own mouths is powerful. An affirmation.

I fell like this and most discussions of this text leave out something very important. The fact that Jesus DIDN'T ask the same question 3 times. If you look at the greek you see that Jesus ask Peter "do you love (agape) me?" two times and two times Peter responds "Yes, lord I love (phileo) love you" and the third time Jesus ask Peter do you "do you love (phileo) me?" and Peter responds phileo. There is a pretty big difference between agape and phileo and it's sad that it's lost in translation.

This is a good point but when I was at college our NT lecturer suggested that in the book of John these words for love are used interchangeably. He said this meant that Jesus' questions to Peter were simply a chance to receive forgiveness and closure. It does seem strange that the different words are used in a single conversation if there is no significance but we should remember that while the Gospels were written in Greek, the actual conversation between Jesus and Peter was in Aramaic.

I often thought about this over the years. I also know of people saying it represents rhe trinity. Me like to think of it like this. Jesus knowing all things ask Peter three times because Jesus had known he had to ask Peter three times before Peter said what the lord wanted him to say the Lord could see it would be a verse the reader would think about .. Peter said lord you know i love you, you know all things. Only God knows all things. Can you as a reader comprehend the light? John 1:5 . Only Christians will understand why this verse is linked to John 21:17. In this verse it shows Peter Comprehended the light, did you?

I see it as once again how Jesus shows us his great Love for Peter . It's certainly for Peter's benefit that he reassures Peter a confirmation of total redemption . It must have felt wonderful for Peter to reconcile and to replace his guilt with a new understanding of what forgiveness looks like. This is especially important for Peter to learn, since this Love is to be passed along through Peter next mission of spreading the Gospel.

I see it as forgiving him for every time he denied him. But I'm inaccurate probably. The thing is, God doesn't require us ask forgiveness in multiples for every time even WE have denied him. (If thst makes sense??). We ask it once, we are forgiven for the one sin, even if committed multiple times.. However, thousands or hundreds of times we need to ask forgiveness for all our sins in this lifetime. Peter could've been forgiven with all three denials in one. Hope it makes sense, probably not lol

Emily Weaver Brown yeah, I've heard used as an example of how Jesus meets us where we are at. Peter understood one kind of love and so Jesus used language that identified with Peter, instead of making Peter change his thinking at that exact moment....

WOW, You took 1 minute 10 seconds before getting to the REASON. 1 min. 10 sec. of factual but unrelated information. You could have summed this up in 30 seconds. That said it would be interesting for you to do a study on the number three in Scripture, because it is fascinating.

In Hebrew doesn't it say "Peter do you Agape me" ... "Peter do you Philia me" and "Peter do you Storge me". He didn't say "Peter do you Eros me" because men do not share that kind of love in the church or do they?
