I put planarias from one of my resurrection jars in my planted 10g tank with a betta. When they lights are off, the betta sleeps and the planarias take over. Without shrimps, planarias become janitors and fun food source for my betta. Keeps the cycle going.

I love fatherfish method, it's beautiful it's a combination of biotope style and jungle aquascape and can make an ecosystem at home

For the 1inch of soil and 2 inches of sand method can i use ordinary garden soil that you can buy at plant stores or must it be a specific type of soil?

Can you use any kind of dried leafs? How often do you need to add more to the sand? Is it a one time ordeal?

I live near Lake Erie. Can I use sand from the lake beach? Does it need washed first?

Good suggestion! I am struggling so much growing Cuba and Monte Carlo with 2 inches of sand above an inch of soil. I'll try to rebuild it.
The tank is 4 months old, Cuba didn't grow almost at all, while Monte Carlo is growing a little bit, but it grows its stem below the surface into the sand. Maybe this behavior is due to the plant trying to reach its roots deeper.
Will this work with leaves that were not dried naturally? Let's say it's July. Can I pick some clean live walnut leaves and leave them to dry?

Boy did I do it wrong...I used pulverized coconut shell along with my substrate to stretch I was alittle short on substrate.
Covered with a small gravel, then sand and a month later my hill blew up! From air being trapped! What a mess, filters plugged. Dirt all over the top!

What’s a good source to buy this stuff from if you live in the city and can’t find it outside?
