Did this early in the morning the other day. Blacked out after dropping the bar over my head so I’ve renamed it to ”good night”.

I love this exercise, it really helped to increase my deadlift. Looking at the comments about how Bruce Lee got hurt from doing this exercise reminds me of a conversation I had with a co-worker. I told him one of the top exercises that people get injured doing is the bench press, and one of my old workout buddies tore a pec benching. That does not mean benching is a bad exercise, the problem is not with the exercise it can a variety of variables; poor set up, fatigue management, range of motion, etc. This is true for many exercises to include the good morning.

I've been following you guys since highschool. 8 years later and you're still the most concise, informative channel out there.

This is an awesome exercise. I feel it in my hamstrings alot more than when I do RDLs, and you can go heavy just make sure you lift with the right technique

"Like you're saying good morning with a lot of weight on your back."

That's every morning for me, man...

I have a friend at university who is used to work as a PT who kindly invited me to the gym last week, and when we did back workouts I found I had problems with form especially with good mornings. I told him and he recommended this video and it has helped me a lot with form and although I'm not entirely sure if one of the functions of the exercise is that it helps with posture (being a novice at the gym) it felt like it really improved mine. Thanks for this video guys, it's been a major help and most of all because it gave me more confidence in my form, I'm actually looking forward to regular gym visits !

You can't half-ass proper form when doing Good Mornings as it poses a high level of risk to the lumbar spine, using it like a class 3 lever.

This is not a man up, chest thumping/bravado exercise, even with proper form. You won't be throwing on 45 plates like you might be able to for squat or deadlift (unless your name is Hafthor "The Mountain" Bjornsson: The World's Strongest Viking.)

Proper form is far more important than weight/resistance, so go light to start (even lighter than you might think). Check your ego here... unless you think surgery, physical therapy, and a nice long vacation from weight training are sexy.

I love these and have been doing them ever since I got the Arnold guide to modern body building about 12 years ago.  A little tip is that I take my towel and roll it up and place around my neck before doing this.  Not like a bar pad (which I never use) as the bar is still against your traps but put the towel round your neck just above where the bar sits.  This will stop the bar rolling forward as you get the bottom of the exercise, particularly when you get the point where you can do this exercise with relatively heavy weights.

This is a great exercise, don't go to trying to bro this up using all kinds of weight. Use light weight to start with you don't want a lower back injury

This is my favorite barbell excercise. For whatever reason, I despise squats. They make me feel like puking. I do em anyways, but they're not fun for me.

Good mornings are always fun. It's one of those excercises where I feel like I'm hitting the form just right, and where I feel pretty good all through the reps until the moment I rack the barbell and then I feel a wave of "holy s I went real hard on that set"

As a result my lower back is tough as nails, I think. But I feel this in my hamstrings as well, glutes a little bit and also in my abs/core.

Starting these doing 5/3/1 but I'm terrified of pulling something. Gonna start with the 20-pound bar and build up S-L-O-W-L-Y with this one!
