The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has arrived in Australia, at least in entry-level front-drive 110TSI Life form, priced from $39,690 plus on-road costs – $4700 higher than the previous base model.

The facelifted mid-sizer German SUV is set to be joined by more powerful all-wheel drive 132TSI Life, diesel-powered 147TDI and high-output 162TSI variants (the latter two in both Elegance and top-shelf R-Line guises) in coming months.

But this first arrival will be a litmus test for the German brand as it pushes one of its best-sellers further upmarket now that the smaller T-Roc and T-Cross city SUVs have slotted in underneath.

Along with updated designs, there are higher standard safety and technology levels too, but will Aussie SUV buyers embrace the Tiguan’s new premium positioning? Only time will tell.
