This is a short "Tech Talk" video about Apple's new pro smartwatch vs GARMIN as a brand.

Apple announced their brand new product called Apple Watch Ultra which is aimed at athletes and other pros trying to get the most out of their smartwatch. But unless you're not familiar with Garmin and their smartwatches, it's pretty obvious that both Apple with their new Watch Ultra and Samsung with their Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are trying to get a share of the market from a brand like Garmin which has been doing really well in this segment of the market.

As an Apple user who runs mountain ultramarathons with a Garmin, this is the first time I've ever considered getting an Apple Watch. I will wait for the reviews from the sports tech channels, but this might be the one to get me to switch — a competent running watch with the full Apple experience and enough battery to get through an ultramarathon is the thing I've been waiting for, and I don't think I'm alone

As an Apple user for many years, I really love Apple products. I have been using Apple Watch S2 & S5 for over years and it's great in many aspects, but I am tired of charging the AW every day. I am a runner, hiker and mountaineer and I have to really plan the use of the AW. I am done. I am moving away from AW to Garmin Fenix 7. Is not only the battery, is the lack of specialized physiological metrics, solar, topological maps and round design (for a device that measures a circular parameter, time).

There is no comparison when you are talking about training. How are we supposed to do serious cycling training with an Apple watch? By raising our arm the entire ride? How can we connect a Ant+ power meter? How do we know our exercice load? Power curve? Training effect? How can I compare my current training with previous month? Can I look at the stats of my last good marathon? Unless Apple develop a good iCloud fitness app that would be comparable to Garmin Connect, the Apple Watch will remain a toy in comparison of a good Garmin watch.

Watch Ultra is going to be amazing! Can’t wait to get my hands on it and judge it afterwards! Can’t wait! 💜💜

I have an Apple Watch Ultra. And I still use my Garmin Fenix 5X for training and exercise mostly just because of the long battery life. I’ve had this watch for about four years and still get at 7-10 days of battery life.

I feel that with this Apple Watch ultra, it will eventually bring more sales to the Garmin platform. People getting the ultra, will more than likely want more features after getting the taste. They’ll either go garmin or keep the ultra and use a garmin as well.

Thank you! Great video! You are exactly correct about the Garmin eco-system. Most of us are multi-sport (cycling, hiking, running, skiing or walking the dog), may have multiple Garmin devices, may require Ant+, like out hiking for multiple days, the Garmin will save to local storage until it can be synced. Not sure if Apple can do that. Also some ppl with heart conditions require a strap-on HRM where the watch is not practical. Maybe too much to ask for yet...

As an avid backpacker, the Ultra’s battery life just doesn’t cut it…yet.

I know a lot of AW owners and this is the first time I have heard of “charge anxiety”. Most drop it on a charger when they go to bed and put it on in morning. Those that use it to sleep track may need a routine to drop it on a charger more often, but all of these watches need a charge eventually, so seems those outside of a normal routine would have the anxiety. Double the battery life just means you can get by longer without a charge under less normal circumstances. Outside of that, nice comparison, though I don’t think Apple wants to be the Garmin of watches. They are simply filling holes that will appeal to more users… the specialized market is so small, I doubt Apple will even try to fill those outlying holes. Not saying some third parties developing apps won’t try to, though.

I seriously doubt Garmin have anything to worry about. Garmin owns this segment of the smart watch era "hands down" - pun intended 😁

I bought Garmin Fenix 7 but had dilemma between Apple Watch 7 as I seldom workout more than 5-6 hours. Now with ultra launched I am sure it will be preferred due to the ecosystem. However what Garmin offers is way better than Apple ( Training readiness, body battery, HRV, Garmin coach, stress score) and also the reliability of these scores

Apple is smart enough to know Garmin’s space and just make a new tweener category. The ultra will likely generate more interest in Garmin’s special features from the general public. Apple will slowly widen its scope and push Garmin and other to innovate faster with more imagination. As competitive cyclist using Garmin in the past, Apple has a long way to go to match the needs of an athlete: and they know it! I am in recreational sport now, and the ultra looks good but perhaps future renditions will be more attractive to me than just the bigger battery and screen.

Myself and my family all use Apple products- Laptops, ipads, iphones, Airpods, APple TV, Apple Music subscription and have been for 10+ years, but the watch is just something i never got on board with. I'm also a long time Fenix owner (3, 5 and 6) and haven't really considered Apple Watch, until this announcement.
BUUUUT.
I dont think I'll be a convert for a number of reasons. The battery life of the Ultra isn't really earth shattering if you're a Garmin guy. My Fenix 6 is 3 years old and still gives me 9-13 days of life after a full charge, and probably closer to 3 to 5 days depending on the number of MTB rides I do and that's with HR and GPS/GLONASS running in the background. The GPS provides great accuracy and if i change data gather to every second, its even more accurate- probably at the cost of battery life, but we're talking days, not hours with Garmin. FENIX has actual buttons, built in topo map's, Compass, Alitmeter, Barometric Pressure, Waypoint, incident detection with alerting, all Body Battery things, PulseOX, HR, Incident Detection and alerting. All my data goes to Strava anyway so I don't use the Garmin Connect except to sync and update. I also extend my screen from my watch to my bike computer too.

In fairness, Im probably not the target market. This may be targeted at current Apple Watch users who want a more rugged watch like a Garmin, but never considered leaving the "walled garden" of Apple. Once i can get my hands on one, I am going to give it a hard look. I do like the thought of a better display and compared to the EPIX, the Ultra is cheaper. The alerting features in case of emergency are clearly better integrated into the Apple family than Garmin's, which may work on the Wife to state my justification to get one---kinda worked with the iPhone 14 i pre-ordered.

As a triathlete and cyclist, the Apple Ultra is not one bit better than the ordinary Apple Watch. It lacks sensor connectivity, like for power meters, and a proper triathlon app, which has all the metrics needed for optimal racing. And it can not send finished training sessions, with metrics, to services like Training Peaks or the likes, to track progress, fitness, fatigue, VO2max, FTP etc. There is no proper way to analyse your training other than on a very basic level. That might be fine for a beginner runner etc., who only need the bare minimum. And it might be good for hikers and divers. But for the more serious athlete, a Garmin Fenix, 955 or 945 is far better. And the price is way too high compared to what you get compared to the Garmin’s. Garmin is not pretending to be a jack of all trades. They are specific sport watches.

The apple is the new born here and still has more to learn. Garmin spend some time on the market and has more the know how, they will not be that easy to take down as people thinking. Apple relies more on their ecosystem to attract them. What can I say the competition is good for the end user.

You know.. in some ways it’s backfiring. I have had AW series 2, 4, and 6, so naturally I considered 8.. but then ultra was announced. First impressions: “whoa, wth is that bulge on the side? No way” then watched reviews and people compare it to Garmin. And I’ve thought about Garmin before but now i’m SOOO torn between Ultra or Garmin.

Question. Is the garmin cell phone capable?

I’m getting started on training for an Ironman and my worry with the Ultra is that is doesn’t link to many training programs or training data tracking programs that coaches can track the data with. Is this true and what are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

The Apple Watch Ultra is amazing, it's the best, it's an all-powerful, and it's an all-rounder of smartwatches...

The Apple Watch Ultra is the key piece that Apple needs to continue reigning and leading in the smart watch area and I'm not saying it, the statistics speak for themselves that the Apple Watch is the best smart watch in the world
