Thousands of rooms, not hundreds. Only a very small portion has been excavated or explored.

What I hate about ancient and lost civilizations is that there is so much we’ll never know. Throughout humanity so much has happened that hundreds of years of history have been forever lost and it drives me crazy I just want to know

"The idea behind the subterranean cities was to protect the inhabitants from foreign invasion, allowing thousands of people to live their lives in total secrecy. During the 14th century, the caves provided Christians with a safe haven from the threat of the Mongolians during the assaults on Timur. Even during the 20th century, they enabled people to save themselves from persecution during the Ottoman Empire."

Turkish people take these places for granted. Most of the people never visit these places. They don't know how lucky they are

Interesting that we assume this was to protect the people in time of war. It takes a Judeo-Christian view of the sanctity of life. In light of the tunnels in Gaza, and those in Southern Lebanon built by Hezbollah, perhaps the practice of hiding the military underground, behind the civillians, is an ancient one?

Could this place be where the Hebrews hid and settled while they were wondering in the desert for 40 years after the Exodus?
