Ladies, if your boyfriend can't handle a 7018 rod, you have a girlfriend

Sometimes old welders are the best we had a Miller welder with a hand crank to set the temperature it was the softest starting Arc welder I've ever used

Been welding for 40 years my favorite rods where 6013 but 7018 has more tensile strength they kind of drip instead of spraying not like a root pass rod or fast freezing rod 6011 or 6010 to help you weld overhead better turn yourself to where you can well from left to right or vice versa put your elbows up on your belly and stand on something make sure you have a jacket and gloves and watch for drips going down in your boot first time welders will try to weld toward them welding overhead the perspective disorients you your better to look at the weld and go from left to right or right to left

I also seen some pinholes just like in MIG welding if you don't get the grease off it can leave pinholes

stick your rod for a few seconds before you start welding. That will heat the rod and take the moisture out rather than sticking in the oven.

When I weld uphill I'll go from left to right and then in the middle I'll go straight up a little bit to let everything solidify when you get done it looks like a roll of dime stacked up and no undercutting you hold on the left and the right side for a few seconds then you lift up until everything solidifies and you stay ahead of the puddle when you want to cool your weld off you push in on the rod just a little bit to control your temperature maintaining the same Gap and speed

Try to buff off all the rust before using 7018 it will help with the porosity

93 amps is what i run when i use 7018's. And make sure to keep your rods warm because if not they will draw moisture and not work. A hot box is what i keep mine in. I know a few things or two about welding. I went to Holbart int. for welding.

Practice make perfect. Hold your rod about 1/16 of an inch from the puddle. Try to push the rod instead of pulling. Them bubbles is where you was raising your rod up and down. Try to keep a steady flow.

lower the temperature When you're welding, That's why your beads look like triangles.

I would try 6011 rod to deal with the porosity.

AC 7018's have always left the little pin holes here and there no matter what, i hate AC hi/low rods. You can have a super clean surface and AC 7018's pin hole.

7018  aren't 6011.   You need your weld surface to be clean.   They won't weld through rust like 6011's will.
