The other ongoing pandemic is AIDS, caused by HIV-1. This virus jumped from chimpanzees to humans in the 1920s but was first detected in humans in Los Angeles in 1981. Since then this virus has infected and killed millions. In this lecture we discuss the origin of HIV, how it was discovered, the pathogenesis of infection, and prospects for prevention and cure.

I remember from last year thinking the HIV lecture was mind blowing. This year is no difference. If you ever want to make a trailer for the Racaniello movie, all the clips should come from this lecture. Your fascination is palpable. Thank you, Vincent.

The pandemic in america is so terrible that since the 80s exactly 1 million infected people are reported. This must be the most steady pandemic i history. Just enough to get the grants.

Have you read the new edition of Pepin's book, Professor? He's advancing his theory that the major crossover event was during World War I

At minute 53 there seems to be a typo. Long lived cells are marked with a half life of 14.1 days, yet you repeatedly mention the half life as 145 days. Is there a typo on the slide?

Hi Vincent, If they kicked the Belgians out, why didn't we see the virus pop up first in Europe. From my research it seems to have spread from Africa to Haiti, Haiti to USA and then spread from San Fran/ NYC across the global to other continents excluding Africa. Are there any cases documented outside of Africa prior to the spread in Haiti and USA?

Dr. Racaniello,

If SARS-CoV-2 has some properties of a retrovirus due to either natural variation or it being recombinant, could long COVID be, at least for a percentage, a permanent infection with 100% eventual mortality when untreated?

unfortunately Vincent there plenty of fools who think their ignorance have the same values of facts. with social media lowering the barrier to entry its no wonder its rife with misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Thousands upon thousands of professional people at the top of there game have talked out about these huge mistakes, here is just a small list
Neville Hodgkinson, Joan Shenton, Dr Stefan Lanka, Dr David Rasnick, David Crowe, John Lauritson, Dr Rodney Richards, Professor Sam Mhlongo, Kary Mullis, Dr Sam Bailey, Dr Mark Bailey, Dr Claus Kohnlein, Jad Adam’s, Eleni PapEleopulos, Valendar F. Turner, John Papadimitriou, Celia Farber & many many more . All the so called bias peer reviews are totally influenced by profit & all the thousands of careers that have been created by this theory.
