Question of the day 💡Are you Bilingual? What languages do you speak? Let us know.

I initially made videos in both English and native. Quickly gave up the native, as I figured there’s a way bigger English speaking market.. now passed 15k subs, it’s going relatively well

I really struggle with deciding on this one, for all social media channels.
Native language *AND/OR* English?
So, great choice of topic to dwell on! 👌
I am from (and currently living in) Portugal, and Portuguese is my native language 🇵🇹
At the same time, a lot of the information I seek is in English, and often times it's my preferred way of communicating, as it is commonly accepted as a 'universal' language.
This is really a tough one! Always wondered which language to choose, or if I even should share content in 2 languages.
So this comes in handy! 🙂 Thank you for sharing.

I think subtitles are a good option too. I look at a lot of non native English you tubers who don’t speak English but have subtitles and I enjoy their content the same way I enjoy foreign movies.

My advice is that if your English is good enough and decently understandable, start with an English channel. If you start with your native language you may never end up with a channel in English and English is the universal language. Don't worry about your accent, have you seen how many super successful channels have a host with an accent? If your English channel ever gets to be successful enough, you can hire translators to your native language and other languages like Mr. Beast does. He has as many subscribers on his other languages channels (if you combine them all) as he does on his main Mr. Beast channel.

Interesting you mention this today. My main channel (for teaching English) has always been totally in English to cover most countries and learners.
Then I uploaded a couple of videos explaining two topics in Spanish (which I speak, not 100% fluently but enough to express myself) and I noticed the Spanish speakers loved them.
SOOOO.... about a three weeks ago I created a channel specifically for Spanish speakers. WHY?
Because I also thought the same that if I uploaded content in Spanish ... it could deter my regular viewers, especially those who don't speak that language.
When I was LIVE, some "regular viewers" were even a little confused and mentioned this in the chat.
So far I'm quite happy with how it is going with the new channel.
ALSO ... don't worry about not speaking your "other' language fluently (because I don't). Many appreciate the effort you make to communicate in their language.

I’ve been wondering about doing content in Spanish and Portuguese for awhile now. This video is something I NEEDED! Thank you so much!

Amazing content as usual!
I have a Food recipes channel in my native Language (Brazilian) and to be fair it took awhile to grow the channel due to competition, but by now after a few years i have managed to have around 9k Subs and around 50k monthly views.

And by now i was wondering to start a new channel in English that will be an extension of my main channel, but in English, so the same videos were they will be dubbed.

If the experience goes well, probably in 12-18 month i will create another channel in Spanish probably, but time will tell.

Oh, this is the video I needed today. I'm literally starting my Instagram gardening page today, which I hope will be the launching pad for me to start making youtube videos on a regular basis.

One of the things holding me back has been the issue of deciding if I should go for Portuguese (my native language) or for English. As I'm aiming to reach an audience of younger people, which have a higher likelihood of understanding English, I'm starting everything in Engllish, even though I'm super self conscious of my pronunciation in English.

However, I really also want to make an impact in Portuguese, and contribute to changing gardening in Portugal for the better, and being a believer in local action, I might at some point start something in Portuguese.

Of course, I also thought a lot about the possibility of starting everything in Portuguese and just captioning in English, but I'm not sure people want to be hearing a different language and just reading in English. I feel like that wouldn't work as well as you can expect it to at the beggining.

This is the reason why I’m choosing to do my leadership channel in Spanish. I struggle with which language to choose. Thank you for this!!!

I definitely want to upload in more languages for a larger reach. Even though I’m a small channel, I try my best to at least fix the automatically generated closed captions. I noticed that 20% of my audience uses the captions. I want them to have the best experience!

Two channels would be difficult to run. I agree, start with one.

The idea is good - though managing two channels in two languages is really challenging.

I have a YouTube channel in English but is not my native language, my native language is Spanish.

I started my journey in July of 2019, I live in a foreign country and I’m covering the country by giving tips of any sort to future travelers, I was so uncomfortable doing it in English at first because my English isn’t perfect but I tried to get out of my comfort zone and started that way, so far that channel is going great (already 80K) but since I also have audience from Spanish speaking countries I was just adding subtitles to my videos which btw it was a lot of work and I hate adding subtitles, not for me, but according to the analytics the Spanish subtitles weren’t clicked as much as I imagined so that made me realize that my Spanish speaking audience wasn’t watching my content so finally after almost 4 years I decided to start another YT channel but fully in Spanish, same videos, same format and now is working wonderfully! Within 2 months I reached 5K and now my Spanish is almost 11K and it’s been only 3.5 months since I started my Spanish channel.

Is always a great idea having 2 if you can speak 2 languages. And don’t be afraid if you cannot speak fluently! That was my biggest fear at first, just forget about that and go for it! Even native speakers do not speak perfect and have tons of mispronunciations too 😅

The video for foreign workers in Korea is appropriate for the language common to many languages. It's English. But my English isn't good either. I'll try harder. Thank you for today's video as well. Peace!

Great video! Your title was the first question that I asked myself before starting the YouTube journey. I ended up choosing the most challenging choice of all and not go with the native language. Sometimes I wonder if that's something that could potentially affect the growth and if, as they say, would have been better to be a small fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond 🙈
