At first, I thought it was multiplying 3 and 1/2. When I did the calculation I obviously got a smaller number than 8(sqrt 2).

So then I added 3 and 1/2. Ultimately, doing so I got the right answer.

As long as I didn't submit it, and instead checked my work, I will be right afterwards.

IMO using log on both sides is the easiest way to solve this one.

Actually decided to use properties of logarithms
1. Log base 4 both sides
2. Calculate each log
Log base 4 of 8 is 3/2
3. Simplify log(sqrt 2)
1/2Log base 4 of 2
Log base 4 of 2 is 1/2
So 1/2 log base 4 of 2 = 1/4
X = 3/2 + 1/4
Final answer:
X = 7/4

I did:
ln(4^x) = ln(8sqrt2)
x ln4 = ln(8sqrt2)
x = ln(8sqrt2)/ln4
x=1.75

But I guess the whole point was to accomplish the same answer without calculator.
