SpaceX Flight 5 NEW Launch Date Revealed But FAA Says Something Weird...
We just got a new launch date for Starship Flight 5! But wait! The FAA’s environmental regulatory agency has said "no go."
Why? What exactly is the correct launch date for Starship?
Meanwhile, ULA’s Vulcan is set to launch "Certification 2" today!
Let's dive right in!
Recently, the space community has been abuzz with signs suggesting the potential for SpaceX's next Starship launch. Although there has been no official confirmation from SpaceX or Elon Musk, this information has sparked excitement and anticipation among those interested in the space industry.
One key indicator that observers are paying attention to is the issuance of a Notice to Mariners (NOTMAR) by the local Coast Guard. This is a routine procedure, which has been carried out in previous Starship launches, aimed at ensuring maritime safety in areas that could be affected by the rocket launch.

And this time, that notice was again posted at the beginning of October, leading many to believe that Starship might fly in just a few days.
“On October 12, 2024, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. (CST), rocket launching operations are scheduled to take place near Boca Chica, TX. Back-up launch dates and times (in CST) include the following: October 13, 18, and 19, 2024, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. October 14, 15, 16 and 17, 2024, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. Mariners operating offshore in waters east of Brownsville, Texas, are advised of scheduled rocket launching activities and associated hazardous areas which may impact navigation interests. Navigational hazards from rocket launching activity may include, free falling debris and/or descending vehicles or vehicle components, under various means of control. The hazard areas will remain in effect for approximately 40 minutes after the launch. Vessels should operate in a heightened state of awareness during this time and avoid all waters within rocket flight trajectories originating from the launch site near Boca Chica/Brownsville, Texas. The rocket launching.”

This means that if Starship is permitted, it will launch on October 12, the weekend after next, with backup dates from the 13th to the 19th, with a window ranging from 1 hour to almost 2 hours. This is a suitable timeframe for a Starship launch.
The notice mentions the Boca Chica launch site, in Texas! So, what more could it be? A launch from this location could only be Starship. This notice is issued to warn maritime traffic about potential hazards in the areas where the rocket might pass.
What we and SpaceX are most eagerly awaiting now is the FAA launch license. All it takes is that one stamped piece of paper, and the weekend morning could turn into the most thrilling morning yet.
However, the FAA never gives us good news exactly when we want it. They even dampened expectations by confirming that there are no changes to the Starship launch schedule published on September 11, and Starship Flight 5 is not expected to fly before the end of November.
This is disappointing news for us, but we also can’t deny that the NOTMAR notice does mean SpaceX is actively preparing for activities that could affect the waters near their launch site—though that doesn't necessarily mean a launch.
