I have a 36 set! I suggest scribbling the pencils on a piece of scrap paper (or a palette) and creating your own custom ink colours. This will give you so much more colour choice from that 12 set!

Hiya. I've been playing with Inktense for a couple of years now and I adore them. They certainly have a personality nothing like anything else I've evr used and there was a steap learning curve initially. One tip... get the white Inktense. pencil is great, block is better. It's opaque and you can use them to tame down the brighter/ darker colours. Also I like to use a brown fine liner to add the line art. It gives some definition but doesn't dominate the painting. Anyway, thanks for the video. I love to see more people discovering these amazing pencils.

The thing people forget/don't know about Inktense is that they are NOT watercolor. They won't lift up or blend out once dry. They are ink. You can layer with them (very well, actually). It takes a while to get used to. Also, several of the brighter, pinker colors aren't as lightfast as the rest. Derwent has that info on their website though. They also come in block form.
Cute drawing Valerie :)

Oh, fun! These are one of my very favorite things to work with, especially in coloring books. I rarely ever use the pencils themselves to lay down the color though - more often, I tend to hold the pencil in one hand and a wet brush in the other and pull the color off like onto the brush then put it on the paper, unless I've got a really dark, dense area I want to work on. I also love that once it dries it doesn't move when you add more water or color/ink on top of it.

Another fun thing to do is use a blade or scraper to get shavings of the pigmented core from the pencil and mix that into another medium or light/white paint of just about any kind to make a color-matched paint to use in a project. It's easier to do that with the inktense blocks, but I couldn't afford a set of both blocks and pencils, so I'm making do. :)

I've got a set of 72 pencils. I love them. I usually use by scribbling on a palette and then painting with them or just using the brush on the pencil. If while sharping the pencil the lead brakes don't throw the lead away. Put the lead on a palette and use a brush on it. As long as the pigment is not activated (dissolving whole piece of lead) you can continue to use until gone.

I have the blocks and the pencils and I quite like them both. The key to these, though, is recognizing that they're ink and once wet, behave like it. That means that they don't lift like watercolour and they blend a bit different. I see them a lot like the classic ink sticks used in Asian drawing as you can actually grind the "lead" and use water to turn the grounds into an ink. Derwent even makes a little grater for this purpose, intended to be used with the blocks.

My suggestion, for those more comfortable with a traditional watercolour feel is to go for the blocks. You can largely treat them like pan paints and mix accordingly.

Hi Valerie. I Just watched this video of your's. I'm always excited to see other artists try out these pencils. I have been using Inktense for 2 years now and I adore them. They have become my number one choice for making coloured sketches as I can achieve a lot of colour in a small amount of time. They have a unique personality amongst art supplies. I use them in colouring books and in my own original works. I am currently using them for a 30 day monster girl challenge (which will go up on my channel as a once a week series). There are a variety of techniques you can use with them. I like to get big washes by scrubbing the inktense with a large water-brush onto a white plate to get a puddle of ink that I can quickly apply to the paper. (Note... don't do this on a plastic palette... this stuff stains like crazy!) You can also use Inktense for painting textiles as you can set them permanent with a warm iron. (I have some very colourful cushion covers!) Please enjoy your Inktense pencils. They really are amazing when you get the hang of them.

I really suggest making a color blending chart just like you would for any watercolor set. I did it with the colors from the set of 12 even though I have the 72 count set. You can actually get 132 different colors from the set of 12. One color for blue down first with yellow over it blended and another color for yellow down first and blue over it blended and so on and so forth. I hope this helps! Cheers!

You can mix them pretty easily. Also for mistakes invest in the white ink tense block. It dries very opaque and can be inked over again with any color fairly easily.

Hi! I love using the Inktense in coloring books. You can pull paint from the tip using a damp brush if you want to use less water or if you're covering a large area- lay the pencil more on its side. They take a little more work to blend than Copics but a least they don't bleed through the back of most pages. I love your cute character here. It looks like there's a story behind this shot. Hmm? - Faith
