I remember sitting in for a screening of "Video Game: The Movie" in highschool, hosted by its director. If you aren't aware, it's a documentary highlighting the lives of Edmund McMillen & Tommy Refenes (of Super Meat Boy fame) and others, notably Phil Fish.

Out of all of them, Fish stood out as being quite neurotic. There's a scene where he discusses killing himself if the showcase of his title Fez didn't go well for him (he was in a dispute with a collaberator at the time). All in all doesn't same like a very stable individual and really opened my eyes to the "progressive, anti gamergate" clique types that have flooding the field of game development. They want to display themselves as the "sane" ones so badly, even when its obvious they aren't.

The creator of FEZ shitting on Japanese games is just too funny. Everybody knows Japan makes the best games. All Phil did was make one mid indie game and dip out.

It's kind of a bummer how sketchy Phil Fish turned out to be because Fez is actually quite good.

To be fair, the majority of Japenese games on PC even till this day but ESPECIALLY back then when he said that, are technologically abysmal. They have cool art and cool ideas and cool mechanics, but in terms of visual fideltiy, visual performance, and feature-sets especially to do with modding and user-customization, they were/are terrible... Bloodborne and the Souls games are a prime example. Despite being literally genre-defining AND genre-leading for a decade, they still put out games that not only look so blurry and dull because of the engines they pick, but they suffer from all manner of problems... almost always a 30 or 60fps cap which is unforgiveable for high-precision high-difficulty games like this, but they can be stutter fests, have no FOV options, no ultrawide, black barred cutscenes... on top of them being culturally against modding so even when users try to fix it and add new stuff to the game, they try to do everything they can to insult that work and block it (though because of their technological incompetence, they usually also fail at that). And then on top of all of that, because the entire market in Japan is owned by Nintendo and Sony, supposedly high-tech people are afraid to even touch a PC, and they're greedy and controlling as hell, so SO MANY TITLES end up with console exclusivity permanently, heavily limiting what the developers are even able to create and locking away all the high-end features like mouse aim in any FPS/3PS, ultrawide, high FPS, high resolutions, modding, and on and on.

It’s a shame that you have the only confirmed career kill from GG compared to Ethan Ralph, Milo, Instig8ive Journalism (remember him?), Matt Jarbo and maybe even Saliva of Akkad. But no one even acknowledges it.
