Every game developer is gonna have someone hating "him/her" of this or that,  
of course. It's either a critic, reviewer, or whatever to make their opinion or not. Phil just completely took it the wrong way. That's just how the world is.

I seriously laughed out loud when I heard this news, he was being a pretentious prick all the time, throwing offensive comments at a gaming culture that spawned and popularized the genre that made his game so succesful, and ALL OF A SUDDEN he gets mad when someone calls him out for it and decides to outright cancel his game. What a spineless, cowardly and hypocritical attitude.

Phil Fish comes across to me as a whiny, melodramatic hipster. If you want to be a public figure so you can sell your games, you have to be prepared for criticism.

I remember meeting this guy once just as FEZ was releasing and saying I remembered seeing this kind of mechanic in a flash game. He insisted it was stolen and rushed to market in flash based on a demonstration of his game. I explained that I thought maybe he had something to do with it, which is why I asked. He insisted that the idea was stolen and he had it first. I said I only asked because I wanted to know if he had anything to do with the flash game. He said that the idea was stolen. I left.

It really was. Without provocation the guy just insults an entire country's industry. It's those kind of filterless statements that make people cringe at his personality. He did apologize later on, but an empty gesture. When you speak something from the heart, that's what you really feel. A then carefully crafted thought over apology is purely for PR reasons.
