Jacks performance wouldn't have been nearly as good without Shelley Duvall's to balance it out. She's a very underrated actress, but for this movie in particular.

Kubrick loved Nicholson's performance & equated it to a James Cagney performance to Spielberg who at 1st hated it. I equate it to George C.Scott in Dr Strangelove. Nicholson has the incredible range to go from Chinatown to The Shining to The Joker to A Few Good Men with many brilliant & varied performances before and after.

I hated the Shining when I first saw it. I hated Jack Nicholsons performance. After several more viewings, however, I consider it a masterpiece & now it's in my top 10 all time films.

I dont blame Jack Nicholson, but Jack Torrence wasn't anywhere near like this in the book ! You actually feel for Torrence in the text, he's battling loving his son and his family the whole time, and its that love that saves his family ultimately. This movie absolutely BUTCHERS the story for me

Because Kubrick makes films for himself with all these references which have nothing to do with the story and he always uses the most hammy shits like her did in dr strangelove
