Is a basic Porsche 911 better than a BMW M3?

It’s time for two of the best RWD cars you can buy to go head-to-head on track! That’s right, Mat’s brought his BMW M3 along to go up against an entry-level Porsche 911 Carrera to see which is the true track king!

So how do they compare? Starting with the BMW, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo that can put down 510hp & 650Nm of torque. It’s the heaviest car here, though, tipping the scales at 1730kg.

Then we have the entry-level 911. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3-litre flat-six twin-turbo that can put down 385hp & 450Nm. So it’s way down on power compared to the BMW, but it’s got one big advantage - it’s 225kg lighter!

So what do you think - will the more powerful M3 snatch it? Or will it be a walkover for the 911? You’ll have to keep watching to find out!

Under four seconds in the bog standard car.
The standard 911 looks so elegant too. No fripperies. No posturing.
Just beautiful lines, mechanical grip and that incredible straight six.
Pound for pound and £ for £ it's the best sports coupe in the world.

So both definitely comparable. But on our UK roads 0-60 is more relevant AND then if you consider depreciation - 911 is the one to go for!

I have a 991.2 Carrera S and on the road I have never thought, "I wish it was quicker" The ONLY thing I do wish it had is a bit more exhaust sound, which is lost a bit with the turbos. Otherwise I love just going to run errands on it, not to mention the occasional track day.

I had the exact same M3 follow me yesterday in my M140i and looking back in my rear view mirror and seeing that M3 made me feel intimidated!! The thing looks mean af!!! The M3 looks so much better in person and looks way more aggressive too
