I believe smoking was thought to be healthy back in the days, i forgot how so though. Not to mention, people at that time didnt know how badly smoking or any air contamination would effect the patients (his wife here) with tuberculosis. Its been a long time ive seen this movie so i cant provide a lengthy explanation but thats kind of the gist of it.

Not that AT AL. I’ve watched Arrietty, my neighbor Totoro, howls moving castle, spirited away and kiki’s delivery service and never once I would’ve thought that.. They are compassionate, caring and don’t pressure their love interest. I specifically liked the 2 girls father in my neighbor Totoro, he was written so well🙏🏼 warm-hearted, understanding and loving to his kids. Something that you wish of a parent. And lets not talk about howl…😭 i loved to see his and sophie’s journey into stopping thinking of themselves negatively.
Its just a fresh breath of air to watch his movies and forget about all of today’s conflicts, problems and events.

I used to think yubaba was evil but providing an entry level job with no fuss already makes you a saint by today's standards

I think there are more examples of good men in his movies than bad men, and even when a character is kinda flawed, it was still treated as a person with layers and not just "haha, im evil, i kick puppies and eat orphans for breakfast"
This does not apply to straight up villains, but that is another point entirely

The reason he smoked in front of sick wife was because back in the day it was thought of as ok and even bring health benefits. It’s just more fitting timeline wise why he would that.Obviously not ok nowadays but back then thats how it was.

Howl was not made by Ghibli, he's much more dramatic in the original book by Diana Wynne Jones. And it was his character flaw 😄

Ironic, since he urged his own wife to give up her career and become a stay at home mom so he could keep pursuing his own career. He was also emotionally distant towards his own children and insulted many artists by calling their work "disgusting", "ridiculous" or "narcissistic". This guy is more of an arrogant prick than many would like to admit.

Miyazaki definitely feels a lot of guilt and regret for how he treated his wife and family. Not saying what he did was ok but the guy is very clearly remorseful for his actions and constantly tries to make up for it in his animations. His self inserts usually not being the best of people as most of the women in his animations being great representations of them, no doubt also heavily inspired by the massive sacrifice his wife made for him and his family of giving up her dream/passion of pursuing her dream of being a famous animator, all for the sake of taking care of their family and raising their child. Miyazaki constantly brings up how he is a horrible father and how his family have every right to hate/despise him.
