What is a LIGHT YEAR?

A light year is a way of measuring very big distances in space. It's how far light travels in one year.

it travels at a speed of about 186,282 thousand miles per second.

If you multiply that speed by the number of seconds in a year, you get approximately 5 point 8, 8 trillion miles, which is what we call a light year.

In one second, light can travel around the Earth more than seven times!

To better understand the enormity of a light year, the Oort Cloud is around 2 light years from Earth. Voyager 1, a spacecraft launched by NASA, has been traveling for over 45 years and is expected to reach the Oort Cloud in about 300 years.

The Milky Way is 100,000 Light Years across!!!

Astronomers use light years to measure the distance between stars, galaxies, and other celestial objects because these distances are so enormous that it's hard to comprehend them in terms of miles or kilometres.
