What are light years?
Hello Happy Friends!
Are you ready to learn?
Do you know how long it takes for light to go around the Earth seven times?
It takes One second!
Today, we’re going to discover how the queen of speed, the light, lets us measure the distance to which objects in space are at.
Today, we’re going to learn about… Light years!
The light, is the queen of speed, there is nothing that can go faster. It travels 299 792 km per second, or 9 point 4 billions of km a year. Well that is exactly a light year, a light year is equal to 9.46 billion km.
Light years are like km or m on Earth, it’s the unit of measure in the Universe.
But… What do we use light years for?
The universe is immense, it’s so big, that objects like planets or stars within it, are very far away from each other.
They are so far away, we can’t measure these distances in km and even less in m, because they would be huge figures.
For example, the Andromeda Galaxy is the farthest celestial body that we can see at a glance, is 2.5 million light years away.
If we had to put this figure into km, we would have to multiply it by 4.96 billion, giving us a figure that won’t fit on a calculator.
The truth is, for astronomers, light years are very useful, don’t you think? …
Goodbye friends! See you next time!
I hope you’re always ready to learn!
Bye!
