I first came across Marie Kondo when a friend of mine told me about her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. I never thought to read it because well, at the time it just didn’t seem that interesting to me. Fast forward a few years, I came across Marie Kondo’s Netflix show “Tidying up with Marie Kondo”, watched it, and since have been meaning to apply her KonMarie method of cleaning on decluttering and tidying my room.

I honestly never thought that cleaning my room and clearing it of extreme clutter would change my life, but boy am I wrong. I was overly optimistic and thought I’d be able to get through cleaning and decluttering my bedroom in a day; but it ended taking a few days actually. I cleared and cleaned and tidied everything from clothes, to books, to papers, to komono (small items & things) and finally, sentimental items.

The sentimental items really were the hardest - i am a... very sentimental person and i attach a lot of my memories to physical items. I moved a lot as a kid, moved cities a lot, and inevitably changed schools a lot too, so over the years, i have ended up keeping a lot of things - from cards i get from friends, notes i used to pass in school, to tickets to theme parks, or airplane tickets from trips i really enjoyed. i have hoarding tendencies to be honest and it was hard to get rid of some of the sentimental stuff but trying to minimize my possessions to just those that spark joy was actually quite freeing - like a weight lifted off.

So, clean with me, declutter with me and i hope you enjoyed this video.

If you liked it, do let me know! and if you have any video requests, let me know too!

Marie Kondo's 6 Basic Rules of Tidying and Decluttering:

1. Commit yourself to tidying up
2. Know why you're doing it
3. Finish discarding first
4. Tidy things by category, not by location
5. Follow the order of: Clothes, Books, Paper, Komono (small items & things) and Sentimental items
6. Ask yourself - does it spark joy?

Finally, someone with actual clutter. I'm tired of seeing all the konmari videos where the person has a little pile of junk in their otherwise nicely tidied and decorated room, lol.
I keep a lot of the same kinds of sentimental items too, can definitely relate. I'm trying to organize my papers right now, but I'm having trouble letting go. (I also keep empty boxes and things that just junk up my room. I don't why either). I also have "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, " haha

I've put cards and such in a photo album. That way made it nice to look at whenver I get sentimental.

HAHAHAHAHA! "Oh no I think I was meant to bless this room first!" It's always so easy to watch a decluttering video but that inner turnmoil and frustration is always underestimated. I love how easy it is to watch this!

Just a tip, I also save a LOT of sentimental ”clutter”. After I got a specific box to out all those things in the ”clutter” got a lot easier to handel.😁

I started scrapbooking and putting sentimental paper things (cards, pictures, certificates, tickets, etc) in them. So far I have 3 with each having different types of memories in them and it's really fun!

Janice, l love it when you say: “l hope you’re doing well” at the beginning & “BYEEE” at the conclusion of each one of your videos ... you look so
sweet & gorgeous when you do that ! 👍👍👍

I've learnt a good minimalist rule of thumb is to keep the number of clothing items to a maximum of about 50, when you get a new item of clothing then one has to go . anyway great job on the declutter.

Finally someone with a messy room and not just loads of clothes that make it look cluttered.

I have always been embarrased of my room. I attempted the marie kondo method, but kept keeping all the things.

I struggle for my whole life with this issue of saving stuff, family of moderate level hoarders, I used to be poor and lived in studios with little possessions and I was fine, I hope to get back to that level

I'm so happy for you seeing the awesome results in your room and how you pulled through even in front of the huge pile of clothes and papers. The sentimentals you should definitely keep without remorse. These things can't be replaced after all. MK changed my life so much since I started using the method. It's true, if you go through it once successfully, you will never need to do it again. It's such a liberating feeling to be able to LET GO of things without any anxiety. I also stopped any impulse buying and became in general much more aware of quality and design of new purchases. You will see, soon you will be folding clothes, towels, bedsheets neatly in seconds like it's a reflex. Everyone deserves to live in a clean, decluttered, beautiful space.

Out of all the people I've watched using this method (I've been wanting to declutter my room and convince my mom to downsize too) you are the most like me. I have a lot of close, but tend to stick with like 5 main sets, and I put a lot of sentemential value on small items. Thank you for the video though!

I just found your channel. I love it! I am the exact same way about cards. My grandma is 91, and every card or letter that I get from here I keep because I never know when it will be the last one. And I was a pre-K teacher for many years, so looking back on the hand drawn cards from the kiddos always makes me smile.
