Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused Vladimir Putin more trouble than he had anticipated.
Sweden and Finland joined NATO, Russian borders and Kaliningrad were surrounded by NATO troops, and the Baltic Sea became a NATO lake.
But this was only the beginning.
The US and NATO mobilized their troops in Eastern Europe to counter Russian aggression and the danger of the war spreading beyond Ukraine. While the US increased the number of troops in Europe to over 100,000, NATO increased its military presence on the Russian border by almost eight times.
But this was the first phase.
Phase 2 began with Putin’s direct threat to NATO.
In his annual State of the Union address in February 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin targeted the West, saying that “Western leaders think the war is a ‘cartoon’ and that Russia’s ‘strategic nuclear forces are fully prepared.’”
This situation was unacceptable to NATO.
Putin’s direct threats triggered the highest level of security measures in the Baltics, Nordics, and Eastern Europe.
So how did NATO respond to Putin’s red line and nuclear threats?
NATO accelerated the rearmament of its eastern flank. Russia sent very powerful military equipment, war machines, and military units, including nuclear-capable weapons and vehicles, to NATO members on the border with Ukraine and Belarus.
In Phase 2, NATO began building land corridors to accelerate the deployment of 800,000 soldiers and heavy weapons to war zones in order to strengthen Europe’s defenses against possible Russian aggression.
We will examine the details of the news in our video.
