“Do this to get rid of the splinters” does it right over the bowl of food lol 💀

In German we call this the "Vorführeffekt" or demonstration effect. It means that if you try to demonstrate something, it doesn’t work or goes wrong. 😄👍🏼

Thank you for explaining that. Never thought about making a triangle with the paper sleeve. I just usually set them in the side of my plate

I've read the Japanese thinking is opposite. By rubbing your sticks together you are telling the sushi restaurant they use cheap sticks and it is considered offensive.

Same lmao, I'm Asian myself, yet I drop my food when I'm teaching Someone how to use chopsticks 😔😃

As a kid (I am Korean) I was always taught not to rub the wooden chop sticks together. It was an insult to the place/owners, it implied that they were cheap because only poor quality places would have the wooden chopsticks that wouldn't break evenly or would have splinters

Edit: I feel I need to add this in. This etiquette rule of not rubbing the chopsticks together is much older than me (I'm 48). I don't know where it started or why. I just repeated what was told to me as a child. It is not the same for every place or every country or even very place in the same country.
- chopsticks do not reflect the quality of the place
- chopsticks are still made out of wood not just the one time use ones
-Your etiquette beliefs may not be the same as other beliefs and that is ok
- I can't believe I have to do this over chopsticks

2nd edit- I need to clarify things. This is not a poor or rich thing. It was a cheap, as in cutting costs thing. Which tends to lead to poor quality product. So rubbing chopsticks together was implying that the owners/people were too cheap to pay for the better quality ones which in turn implied they were too cheap to supply good quality tea and food. This was the insult. Not that you were rich or poor. In most Asian cultures it was expected you brought out your best for your guests no matter if your were rich or poor.

It's funny we do the same thing in Canada with our chopsticks, but apparently they do not in Japan, as its disrespectful in a restaurant, which I don't understand because the sticks need it; they're always flaky lol

Lmao same, I feel like whenever I use chopsticks in my daily life I’m a pro but as soon as I try to teach someone almost all my knowledge of using chopsticks goes away (as an Asian myself)
