Mainly to protect it against fruit flies. This is done all over the world, not just China.

Not only china all asian cover their fruits to keep away bugs. Instead of using pesticides. Phillipines etc. To make unique shape the japanese was the first to do this.

These cube fruits are from Japan. They do that with water melons because the japanese were upset with round objects not being really good at using storage space efficiently. So they made stackable, cube like water melons

Its indeed make the fruits clean, but its also need effort to cover fruits in the field, like in a huge area its not just hundreds but thousands of thousands fruits to be covered.

Everything starts somewhere. Let us learn and move on. The countries in Asia have hard working people. This is no big deal to them. Here in America, we don’t do this and it takes other people somewhere to go and investigate and report these things.
