I need to clarify for people who doesn't know .... Pin Yin is NOT used in Taiwan. In Taiwan they use Zhu Yin and looks like this ㄅㄆㄇㄈㄉㄊㄌ .... I just thought I wanted to clarify that if someone is watching who wants to go to Taiwan to study Chinese.

When coding, programmers need to define variables by choosing a type and giving them a name. As a consequence, a lot of Chinese programmers who can not speak English always tend to name their variables with Pin Yin. So you will see a lot of "int Ma = 10;" or something like this. Sometimes it's really confusing because you don't know whether it means 10 moms or 10 horses.

I really hope the world doesn't lose the traditional or standard Chinese characters. The writing is so beautiful, it is an art form which deserves to be preserved for all people in the future!

We use zhuyin fuhao 注音符號 in Taiwan. Same concept as Hanyu Pinyin. Simplified is not faster to type. Just faster to write.

I still use Wubi to type Chinese. It is difficult to learn but once you get it, it has much more efficiency than typing in Pinyin. And Wubi typing method matches the Chinese way of constructing characters other than western/middle-eastern/... ways of constructing pronunciations. Also using Wubi never let you forget how to write Chinese characters, and sometimes let you notice some wrong considerations of certain constructing parts of a character.

Great video. I'm a Silicon Valley American. I've been to Hong Kong and Shenzhen 4 times now. I found myself learning some characters from the MTR (subway) station names. This video helps me start learning Chinese for real. -Frank

It's similar for Japanese, they use english alphabet conversion into Kana/kanji, however it's easier to get a proper sentence because the words are more distinctive. Koreans are laughing at this with their easy Hangul characters

Glad to have pinyin! I had to learn ㄅㄆㄇㄈ when I studied in Taiwan. It's not horrible, but for westerners that already know English, romanticized pinyin is so much easier to pick up. Thanks for that chairman mao. Not so much for the killing of millions of your own countrymen, but huge win with pinyin and simplified characters
