Are Ramayan and Mahabharata REAL or FAKE? | History of India | Adipurush | Tishya Says

For anyone who believes that the Ramayana and Mahabharat are “history” or “historiography”, I would ask them to pick up a wonderful little book by Dr. SN Balagangadhar titled “What does it mean to be Indian?”

The book raises some important questions, which I think are worth examining. Ask yourself - Do we really need a sense of history to exist as one united political entity? An accurately recorded statement of facts, recording Ram, and Lakshman as local princes? Or the Pandavas and Kauravas as two warring tribes? Would we want them to be reduced to that? Just men lost to the pages of history?

These questions also find new relevance with the release of a new bollywood movie "Adipurush", which makes a complete mockery of one of the great epic - Ramayana.

When we start asking ourselves - how much of these epics is real and exaggeration, we are essentially playing the coloniser’s game. I am not saying don’t ask questions. I am not staying don't stay curious. But Hindu traditions have a different way of feeding this curiosity. They don’t stop your from questioning the stories. Instead, you learn that true and false are not the right questions to ask. The treasure is the story itself, which weaves the entire subcontinent together without subverting individual identities. It unites and celebrates flora and fauna, animals and gods, heroes and villains alike.

It is and will always remain our itihaas, regardless of whether it makes the page of history.

Clarification:- Someone just pointed out to me that the map of India used at 1:02 is wrong. Obviously, this slipped my notice and is not deliberate at all. 1.why you hesitate to accept the simple fact that ramayan and Mahabharata is highly unrealistic
we can learn lots of things from these stories but accept the simple fact that it is mythology not history....

2.basic common sense and scientific temper is not colonial consciousness....

The story of bahubali is also our history and shaktiman was real later they filmed it in 90's television series, yes i believe in Ramayana & Mahabharata but if you accept shaktiman & bahubali too as our indian history.

krishna and ram are the one who shows true path to the people and next generations they shows us that what is dharma and what is adharm, what is right and what is wrong
their autobiography teaches us that how should we live a life and how to reach that ultimate reality

Thousand years old temple from kailasha to Cambodia says it's in their walls ..who are we to judge now .

I think it is important to understand what differentiates History from Mythology:
History is a study of past events that relies on evidence and primary/secondary sources like inscriptions, documents, artifacts, eyewitness accounts etc.
Mythology usually lacks such empirical evidence and is based more on oral traditions and legends.
So, unless there is conclusive evidence (which everyone can agree upon) to show something to have happened in the past, any event cannot be categorized as History.

Sure, epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana could or could not have been inspired from historical/real events (there are views that Mahabharata could have been inspired by the famous "DasaRajana" war mentioned in the 7th Mandala of the Rig Veda), but since there is no conclusive evidence to prove otherwise, they cannot be categorized as History.

As far as the "lack of any historical records from ancient India" argument goes, it's not true. In fact, there are plenty of historical evidences from ancient India like the Bhimbetka Rock shelters, the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization, Ashoka's Edicts, Ajanta and Ellora caves, etc. In fact, stone tools ranging from lower Paleolithic and middle Paleolithic period have also been found out in our country (somewhere around 250, 000 years old). They are all a part of our history.

P.S. Zeus and Thor are characters of Greek and Norse mythology respectively, nobody calls them real life historical figures.

It's not about Abrahamizing these system or mindset. It's just a question of historical value and clarity on it. It's ok if it is not historical because these 2 epics are the one of the foundational myths of the Indian people, in which it should be cherished and celebrated. Until there is a archeological proof of these 2 event happened, these 2 will remain as just myths and legends just like Illiad and Odessey or the Biblical stories and it's value is only in religion, cultural and literature, not historical.

Indian was NEVER one UNIT even 6000 years ago . I guess you have the basic intelligence to know that the story of Mahabharatha is actually a FAMILY FIGHT/FAMILY DRAMA, the two groups fighting are actually COUSINS. SO when EVEN COUSINS cannot live peacefully with one another. HOW CAN SOUTH VS NORTH, EAST VS WEST who are divided by language, culture, identity work as ONE UNIT? Think about Ramayana, its also a FAMILY DRAMA. Who do you think the monkeys were in the story ? They were none other than people of present day Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The book is so racist that it made southern humans into monkeys.

If mahabhrata and ramayan is not real then who were the people wrote it? and why they wrote it? why they had to choose only a story where a bad guy kidnaps a woman and his husband have to fight and kill him for good? why there was a fight happened in a family between brothers because they disrespect their wives?why krishna existed?

why all these stories were written in specific stories? why only brother faught? it could be kings vs kings, sister vs sisters? why a woman got kidnapped? there could be a guy or a small kid .

why these specific stories have to came out?
